OS X Mountain Lion reaches golden master status

Consumer release coming later this month.

Get your hard drives ready, because Mountain Lion is on the verge of arrival. Apple released the golden master (GM) of Mountain Lion on Monday afternoon through its developer portal, signaling that the company is close to the final release of the next version of OS X.

The GM is limited to registered developers until the final version is unleashed upon the Mac App Store later this month. Apple has not formally announced a release date for Mountain Lion just yet, but did say it would happen sometime this month when it previewed Mountain Lion at WWDC in June. Still, we have a couple of theories about when the release might hit the tubes. Apple has scheduled its third quarter earnings call for Tuesday, July 24th, and the company has a tendency to release products immediately following those calls. Specifically, last year's release of 10.7 Lion came the day after the third quarter earnings call, leading us to believe that Mountain Lion might come down the line on the 25th.

Even if it's not exactly on the 25th, we have heard that Apple is preparing for release within the next couple weeks, so it's somewhat of a relief to see the GM show up at this time. Assuming Apple's developer network doesn't find significant bugs in this release, Apple will be on track to ship the iOS-like OS X update?maybe even alongside some iMac hardware? (Dreamers gonna dream.)

Nice, going to install it now. ML has been very stable for me from virtually the first developer preview onward, it's going to be great on my RDMBP (when it finally ships.)

Awesome, the final waiting has begun.

Waiting for the 10.9 rumors now! :p

ML will be awesome for sure.

I really wonder if Apple will continue this yearly smaller release trend. Let's hope so. (Y)

I can?t install it with FileVault installed. I have to remove it and it takes 10 hours to do so.

If I leave it enabled, there?s no way I found to delete my ML DP4 partition, and there?s no way I found to install it from within Lion. It keeps rebooting into Lion. I?ll install it tonight.

Im betting OS IX will be a merged OS thats used across all the form factors. - iPhones, iPads and Macs. Now add touch screens and gestures and (eventually!) solid voice recognition into the mix and you've probably got a good idea as to where we're going with client computing.

Apple officially ceased Mac OS 9 development in 2002.

i'm not completely sure but I think he meant OS XI not IX

Are you referring to 10.9, or OS XiOS? (See what I did there? yeah.. ohh yeaa)

We are headed to computing thats like the google glasses. Just it will take 5 years to refine the technology and 'accept' it.

Really odd name... OS XI....I thout they would go with OS X 10.10, 10.11, 10.12, etc....

well they have to go to 11.0 eventually

You'd think?

Anyway, Tim Cook specifically said they're not going after the Windows 8 model as one OS does not fit all. So unless Macs drastically change I don't see a full unification of OS X and iOS happing anytime soon.

well they have to go to 11.0 eventually

Actually, they don't have to do anything.

I swear, if I were the CEO of Apple I'd stick with "OS X" until the Second Coming of Christ just to screw with all those people who keep obsessing over its version number.

it's not about obsessing over the version number, it's about big change / improvement. that's the whole point of a full version number increment for an OS

I'm sure when Apple does do OS XI / 11 it will bring great things

it's been about 10 years since OS X and it has brought some great things, but i believe it's nearing about time to move on to the next

Unless Windows 8 does well. They are probably hanging back, waiting to see what happens. Apple (Tim Cook) desperately wants (needs) Windows 8 to fail.

So by your standards Windows 8 is just a minor change it actually being Windows v6.2? And don't give me that "compatibility" nonsense.

How refreshing, the "change for the sake of change" argument.

Well, Apple doesnt name their OS "Mac OS X" anymore, its just "Mac OS" and "iOS".

No. Apple calls their desktop and mobile operating systems "OS X" and "iOS" respectively.

Cute. It's the other way around actually: Microsoft (Steve Ballmer) desperately needs Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 to be a success. Apple already has a proven concept that's doing incredibly well.

Yes, they will.

They announced that last year. :)

Nope, not really.

+1

I'm telling you, I like my "Mac OS X" (meh on dropping the "Mac"), I'd keep it in place forever if I was in charge :p

Let's not provoke another metroll thread...

He's said this about laptop/tablet hybrids, but has he ever said the same about the OS? (source please)
