235 pounds of cocaine seized at Port of Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Customs and Border Protection officers seized 235 pounds of cocaine at the Port of Jacksonville Tuesday. The cocaine has an estimated street value of $3.47 million.

CBP officers found a container that showed signs of tampering while inspecting maritime cargo containers at the port. When the officers examined the contents of the container they found 100 bricks of cocaine, according to a news release from Customer and Border Protection Public Affairs Liaison Jennifer Bradshaw.

Bradshaw said the cocaine was packaged inside four black duffel bags on top of cargo. A K-9 with CBP was then brought in to check the duffel bags and alerted officers that narcotics were present.

When officers tested one of the bricks to verify it was cocaine the test came back positive. No arrests have been made at this time and the case is still under investigation.

The cargo container with the cocaine arrived at the Port of Jacksonville aboard a freighter from Panama and originated in Chile, Bradshaw said.

Customs and Border Protection Director of Field Operations Vernon Foret said, "This is an outstanding example of the excellent work being performed by our officers in stemming the flow of illegal narcotics into the United States. I commend the efforts and dedication demonstrated by our frontline officers in securing our borders."
