FDA approves Truvada, the first pill to help prevent HIV

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!.......God I really hope this works and helps prevent this horrible disease from killing any more people. Let's hope for the best until the Vaccine arrives in 2019 like they are promising.

There's no talk of side effects, that fact alone makes me distrust it completely, all "miracle" drugs seem to have side effects that make the drug worthless unless you are desperate, which a condom and not being promiscuous can easily fix

Truvada does have side effects... potentially quite a few. It is a combo medication of 2 nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It is the backbone for HIV/AIDs treatment. If you have HIV/AIDs and you're virus isn't resistant, then you should be on this drug. It is not benign by any means but is definitely one of the better treatments to be on.

I think this decision by the FDA is fairly rushed. Did they take into account the potential of increasing HIV resistance? This might knock out one of our best drugs to fight the HIV virus. While I agree preventing the transmission of the virus is the most important goal, I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it.

My guess is the side effects would be

Depression, anxiety, panic, thoughts of suicide or death, agoraphobia, feelings of hopelessness, feeling alone

Diarrhea

Dizziness

Dry mouth and sinuses

Elevated liver enzyme levels

Eyes crossed or unfocused

Fatigue, lethargy, weakness, loss of fine motor control

Gas

Hair loss

Headache

Heartburn, indigestion

Heart palpitations, accelerated heartbeat, elevated blood pressure, atrial fibrillation

Hot and cold flashes

Irritability or nervousness

Joint pain, stiffness, or swelling

Leg, foot pain

Memory loss (short-term)

Menstrual spotting, menstrual delay, missed period

Metallic taste

Migraines (severe headaches), stabbing head pain

Mood swings

Nausea, vomiting

Night sweats

Numbness of the limbs

Numbness of the tongue or gums

PMS

Rash, itchiness

Seizures

Sensitivity to light

Sensitivity to sound

Shaking

Shortness of breath

Sleeplessness, restlessness

Spaced-out, unfocused, light-headed, or drugged sensation; difficulty verbalizing ideas, confusion

Sugar craving

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

Upset stomach, burping

Weight gain

Irritability and short tempers

Hostility

Homicidal impulses

Rapid loss of mental clarity

Blindless

Death

I know it will have multiple side effects but at least it gives HIV victims a chance. That's more than they had before.
