Hello everybody. I am going to try to expose my problem as best as I can.

My target is install dd-wrt in my Asus RT-N66U, I have read some information in this thread before and and I have follow the steps:

1) I have configured my network manually ( see the screenshot below)

networkconfiguration.png

2) Holding the reset botton with out energy cable, connect energy cable and switch on the router with the reset botton pressed till the "on" led blinks slowly.

3) Upload the firmware with the tool called "firmware restoration" included in CD from the Asus router on the software "ASUS RT-N66U software utilities".

4) I've try to upload the Asus RT-N66U Firmware: Image for initial flashing dd-wrt.v24-18702_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N66U.trx 2012-03-15 3,29 MB

the transmission of the firmware gets OK! but at the end of the process I got this error: (see screenshot below:)

selectingddwrtmini.png

Here the error: (but in the point 7 with tomato firmware and same error works, therefore I guess that error is not so important)

5) I try to open the following link (http://192.168.1.1/do.htm?cmd=nvram+commit.) on my browser and I got a Time Out.

6)If I try with the same link (http://192.168.1.1/do.htm?cmd=nvram+commit.) in flash modus (see point 2) I got what the following screenshot shows, but noting works.

commndonlyworksinflashi.png

7) If I do the step 2 again and I try to get into the router the firmware called "http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26RT-N/build5x-101-EN/Asus%20RT-N66u%2064k/tomato-K26USB-1.28.RT-N5x-MIPSR2-101-AIO-64K.trx"

I got the same problem of the screenshot in the point 4, but when the process was close to 74% more leds become illuminated, such us on led, network led, wireless 2,ghz led and wireless 5ghz led.

8) Screenshot of tomato working fine:

9) what I am doing wrong? I really do not know. I want to install DD-WRT not tomato.

I did the step 4 again with the big firmware from DD-WRT (I waited always after flashing more than 20min.) And the router does not boot. (only leds of "ON" and network lan are illuminated. )

Thats all what I can said about my problem, if you have questions about it feel free to ask. Thanks in advance for your help.

And Did you READ the instructions here??

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N66U

Clearly NOT, since there is a NOTE saying to use

Note: use build 18946, it fixes the WAN port issue.

Which your not! In the recover method your using it says to use this build

http://dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/V24-K26/svn18946/dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N66U.trx

dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N66U.trx

Also -- seems to me you were not in recover mode when flashing to dd-wrt, once you got tomato on there you can just move to the dd-wrt from that using the web gui you don't have to use the recovery tool.

Budman, thanks a lot for your answer,

Sorry, but when I have read the instructions I have understand twice " Flash the initial DD-WRT build (e.g.) Asus-RT-N66U_18946_mini.trx build and upload."

I did not realized about this WAN port issue.

I have try several times, now I am going to try to install tomato again, and after that to install from Tomato's web interface the following one: http://dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/V24-K26/svn18946/dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin

After that I am going to clean de NVRAM with the 30/30/30 seconds rule and let you know if works.

Thanks again.

let us know if works. If your able to put tomato on there, should be no reason why you can not flash from that to dd-wrt

+BudMan, I did what you told me.

Install from toamto's firmware the following firmware: http://dd-wrt.com/dd...-2_K2.6_big.bin

after that I have clear the NVRAM as the 90 seconds rule says and reboot the router.

I have waited more than 10 mins, the leds from power, lan and both wireless are illuminated but I have no acces via 192.168.1.1 (ping time out)

I try to do my best, but I still don't know what I am doing wrong.

What do you think?

I will really appreciate your answer.

Where did I say to install the big?? Where did you see to install .bin file at all?

If you can not follow the instructions given on the dd-wiki, or you have questions - the best place support is their forums. Not here, I would like to help you but I don't have the router to play with. And have no exp with it at all. Now if you were having issues with a linksys model, I could walk you through about any sort of issue you might see.

what is the exact model number you working with - you sure its supported? Are you using B1?

My router is an Asus not a linksys. Asus RT-N66U

I have try to install the following firmware:http://dd-wrt.com/dd...-2_K2.6_big.bin just because you told me before that this one does not have the WAN port issue.

Its also mentioned on the following guide: http://www.dd-wrt.co...hp/Asus_RT-N66U

Right know I got back to the Tomato's firmware 1.28. ( it works) and I can install as well the original one.

The problem comes up with dd-wrt firmware. I really don't know what to try. I have test everything.

No that is not what I linked to at all..

I clearly stated

dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N66U.trx

I know you don't have a linksys, what I was saying is I have no exp with that router.. Your better off talking to people on the dd-wrt forums who have specific experience with installing on your specific router.

My point is if you can get tomato on it, then there should be no issues with install dd-wrt. I would have to assume your just doing it wrong, or are picking the wrong file.

Again - your best bet for help is their forums!! They are very responsive there in helping!

I think you have told me about it in the post number #29 "use build 18946, it fixes the WAN port issue."

I think I have try as well, but i am going to try again to upload the "dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N66U.trx" from tomato's firmware.

Anyway... I have opened a post there (http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=713058#713058) but till now I do not have a solution.

Thanks a lot for your help!

so did you follow the instructions in that forum

http://www.dd-wrt.co...25cbfc9461576d2

Reading the thread, you did get some answers. But this post jumped out at me

"Folks, the bottom line is, dd-wrt is just not reliable on the Asus RT-N66U. I bit the bullet and have switched to Tomato for this router. It's really similar to dd-wrt. I'm really upset, but trust me, it's not worth the agony of trying to get dd-wrt to work with this router. "

What is missing from tomato that drives you to want dd-wrt on it? If the 3rd party firmware is stable and provides the features you want, I would say just use tomato if your having issues.

Seems there is a bit of a problem with 32 or 64 nvram? And seems few people having problems getting dd-wrt on that router, but tomato seems to be working fine??

Regarding Tomato's firmware, I have read really positive things about it, but my target is to repeat my neighbour WiFi.

He is sharing his WiFi with me, actually I am using an WRT54gL router with DD-WRT but its a little bit old, does not support 1Gigabyte wired land, wireles N. etc.

Therefore I decided to buy the Asus RT-N66U and my idea is to the same as I actually do with my old router.

As far as I know with Tomato's firm is possible repeat a WiFi signal only via WDS and it is mandatory to configure some things in the primary router.

I don't know if yo have use DD-WRT but is really amazing, you can scan wireless nets, connect one like a from a normal laptop (entering the password).

after that you can create a virtual wireless net, connect them and every thing is done. After you can connect to the Virtual wireless net which is at the same time connected to neighbour net.

thats my idea: ==> http://www.dd-wrt.co...reless_Repeater ==> http://www.dd-wrt.co...Repeater_Bridge

In summary:

Tomato firm works fine, but as far as I know I cannot repeat a WiFi net like this ( http://www.dd-wrt.co...reless_Repeater )

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards

Ortigosano

So guy next door is running a N router now? If not going to N on your side is not going to get you any extra speed.

As to only supporting WDS?? I would have to check on that - no experience with setting up wireless bridges or clients with tomato. I use dd-wrt for that ;)
