It seem like Linksys E4200, Netgear WNDR4000, and ASUS RT-N56U are good choices. $100-$200 price range.

I use a cheap Asus RT-N16 with Tomato firmware.

I have four Netgear R6300's the ones that support 802.11ac and they are probaby some of the fastest routers I've ever used, and the AC bridging mode is nice if you need to make a very fast wireless bridge

(note: I have four due to testing the devices)

This is the most stable router I've ever owned, but it's nowhere near as feature ridden as a router that supports Tomato or DD-WRT:

Had plenty of issues with the Linksy/Cisco routers I owned over the years. I had an Asus a few years back and it was pretty decent.

The best out there right now is the Asus RT-N66U. It has the highest speeds you'll get. Wireless ac is useless right now since no clients support it and it's not actually that fast.

That said, no wireless can come even close to the performance of Gigabit Ethernet. Use regular ethernet as much as possible.

If you need more info, the best site by far is this one: http://www.smallnetb...er.com/wireless

I have a Linksys E4200 v1 (the v2 isn't as good) with Tomato right now, and I can get up to 100Mbps over 2.4Ghz WiFi. That said, I do live in an environment with no single other WiFi network but my own, so I have very 'clean air'.

But, as mentioned, there is a lack of adapters to utilize those speeds at this time. I've seen some of the N routers have up to 600Mb or so, but can't really name any right off..

I've always heard great things about the Apple Airport Extreme.

well, depending how fast you want your router. Airport Extreme is 100mbps and this is the speed I can reach in wifi at home.

The airport extreme is an excellent router. I've used Netgear, Linksys, Belkin, and finally my Airport Extreme. This is the most stable router I have owned. I've had it for 6 months now and it's never crashed or restarted on me once. It's not the most feature rich router, and it's pricey, but it's the most stable and maintenance free router I've owned.

It's very "set it and forget it".

I personally use a Time Capsule not only is it an awesome Airport Extreme ultra fast wireless router but it does backups too =) It's been incredibly stable, never gone down since I purchased it.

If you want something flexible - go for one of the cisco e4200v1's and stick dd-wrt on it - been very impressed with mine! Do avoid the v2 though - it does NOT support and third part firmware.

The Airport Extreme is good, no denying that, but there are better and faster things out there that cost less. Don't look at the marketed speeds, they are nowhere near what you can actually get. 600Mbps for example requires 4 spatial streams and a 40Mhz channel, which is something almost no client supports. Most standard clients do only 1 spatial stream which gives you around 150Mbps theoretically. My laptop and router support 2 spatial streams and 40Mhz, which resulted in a theoretical maximum of 300Mbps, though 100Mbps is all I get from it.

^ that. Though I strongly prefer Tomato firmware, it's much lighter and has a cleaner interface.
