It's strange how most large, long-running companies started out doing something so far removed from what they specialise in nowadays.

This fact I find most ridiculous. Nokia's ancient! IBM celebrated it's 100th anniversary last year, whereas Nokia will celebrate it's 150th birthday in 2015. It reached 100th, several years before the first mobile phone was invented.

Actually Nokia starting in one line of work, and winding up in another, is far from new.

Saab-Scania started out entirely as an aircraft manufacturer. (The aircraft-manufacturing side is still around; the automotive side was spun off, and is what folded.)

Toyota Motor started out as a subsidiary of Toyoda Loom Works - textiles, not trucks.

Matsushita Heavy Industries was a heavy-equipment company (their original competition was, in fact, Caterpillar pre-World War II in Japan). Still called that, they are best known for electronics under the Panasonic brand (consumer, professional, *and* industrial usages).

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (like Matsushita) started off in heavy equipment; they still have a heavy-equipment business today - in addition to electronics, automobiles, foodstuffs (humans and pets), consumer and business finance, and even - surprise - insurance (Japan only).
