Lioness battles deadly crocodile

Spotting a crocodile lurking just below the surface of a river in Botswana?s Okavango Delta, she leapt in to clear the way for her cubs.

Grabbing the reptile round its jaws she forced it underwater. It cost her a bite on the nose but a few seconds later her two youngsters and two adults paddled across without harm.

Incredibly the attack was so fast that photographer Pia Dierickx didn?t know what she?d got until she went back through it frame by frame.

?I watched a lioness carefully move out into the channel and then there was a huge splash in the water.

?Luckily for the lioness the crocodile did not do the death roll because her mouth was kept closed between the front legs of the lioness,? Ms Dierickx, 48, from Antwerp, Belgium added.

Crocodiles are vicious creatures... I guess they represent very well how it was to be a prey when dinosaurs were still alive on Earth.
