Mars One plans suicide mission to Red Planet for 2023

Recommended Posts

Bas Lansdorp, the 35-year-old founder of Mars One, said his company is serious about a one-way mission. The company will hold a worldwide lottery next year to select 40 people for a training team. They will then set up a mock colony in the desert, possibly somewhere in the U.S., for three months. This initial team will be reduced to ten crew members.

They will then be sent to Mars, never again to return. :alien:

?We will send humans to Mars in 2023." ?They will live there the rest of their lives. There will be a habitat waiting for them, and we?ll start sending four people every two years.?

The habitat will consist of several housing structures that Mars One will launch before 2023. In 2016, the company plans to launch the first supply vessel. In 2018, it plans to send a rover.

Even with the complexities of sending a human to Mars, attention has centered on the one-way trip. Those selected won?t come back to Earth, although a return mission to retrieve the explorers might not be out of the question.

?In theory, it is less complex to get people back to Earth once you have a sustainable settlement on Mars,? Lansdorp told FoxNews.com. ?However, our astronauts will be offered a one-way trip. We have no idea when it will be possible to offer return tickets.?

Send life'rs up there first, just the really nasty ones, hide food around Mars, and release ferocious monsters at timed intervals, stream live video 24/7 back to Earth > buy popcorn and visit the bookies :D

Wonder how long they expect the astronauts to last ...

Yea I have my doubts whether they would even make the journey, let alone the landing and then surviving on mars

Well here's an odd question, but if they send males and females to mars, would they be encouraged to reproduce or prevented from doing it?..

Who would stop them ?

could be required to be "fixed" before they go?

lol, I would generously pass my ticket to the nearest person and go home

They will have some serious vetting of people to send, once they are off the ground / on Mars, they are the law

Not really a suicide mission, just because you can't return home.... Bit of a misleading title.

In any case, I would love to be one of the pioneers in this. Pretty sure my family would be upset though. As long as they send people up in "pairs," I'd be OK with it. :shifty:

This would be interesting, and I would sign up for it in a heartbeat. Who knows, maybe they can build a self sustaining colony, and start to propagate Mars Ala. Total Recall.

I think they'll probably send some animals first, on this suicidal mission.

Exactly, humans!

:p

That would be a large waste of money and resources. They may send some with them, but not just animals alone.

You do realize you can still have sex after being fixed right? If anything, yuo can have more of it because everyone going will be fully checked for diseases and no risk for pregnancy.

Thrilling news. It's about time at least some of us got off this rock. (Even if it is a long way off.) I hope they last out there, I truly do.

Odds are they will all eventually die from radiation, but it's still neat, and the first baby steps of leaving the solar system.

I'd go in the name of "science"....just to see if my eyes pop out when I try to release the air that Cohaagen is really in control of. But that's just me. (Been there, done that, hence my user name, LOL! Okay, only joking...)

Better yet just send the total prison population then a few 100 years later we'll be watching lame but addictive soaps from Mars.

Sounds like they want people to reproduce to me.

From their site "...such that there is a real living, growing community on Mars..." http://mars-one.com/en/

Yea I know what 'fixed' means, I still wouldn't be choosing to get the snip in order to go live in the most boring remote place not on Earth

It's only around 300 days to get to Mars but there are bigger risks to humans like solar storms, cosmic rays and other nasties.

You forgot the hostile Alien base. :alien:
