One man probably has learned a costly lesson about where he hides his cash.

The unidentified man from Sydney, Australia, sold his car last weekend. The $15,000 (approximately $15,652 in U.S. dollars) in proceeds was earmarked for his mortgage payment and other bills, according to Australian media. Opting not to squirrel away the loot in a mattress or bury it in his backyard, he decided to hide it his oven, which rarely gets used.

Bad move: Turns out, his wife decided to use the oven that day, preheating it for chicken nuggets  and, yes, cooked the cash.

"It was everything I had," he told the news station. "I've got nothing to my name. That money was supposed to go towards my mortgage."

His wife was equally distraught and, reportedly, could not stop crying when telling her husband after she discovered what happened: The cash was baked into a colorful burnt mess.

The man reached out to his lender and the Reserve Bank of Australia for help.

The Reserve Bank advises people to take damaged currency to a bank. According to the Reserve Bank policy, "if several pieces of the same banknote are presented, the Reserve Bank's policy is for each piece to be worth a share of the value in proportion to its size... The combined value paid should be the face value of the original banknote."

What a dumbass. I genuinely feel for the guy but hiding something that can easily burn...in an oven...is just silly. It doesnt even sound like he had it covered in foil etc. I mean I can think of about 10 different areas in the kitchen to hide money that would have avoided this.

Hope the chicken nuggets were good >.>

Who turns on the oven without first looking inside ?

I feel for the guy.. but it's Aussie money.. Plastic, so putting it inside a heat source is several kinds of stupid.

I never look because I NEVER store anything in my oven (I don't quite understand why anyone would  )

i always check my oven, i dont store anything in there. its just incase i forgot to take something OUT the last time i used it, i tend to forget im cooking stuff when i get on computer, so have to force myself to not use a computer or watch TV while cooking anything because of it

also when my sister comes over she tends to re-organise crap, as she thinks its helping me, no mater how many times i tell her not to. and she may have stored something in there without me knowing it

Maybe I'm weird but I keep my money in the bank.

Yes that would be the sensible place but supposing you dont want to have it in the bank for whatever reason, the oven would be one of the worst spots to stash it...was the point.

Oh definitely, I agree. Even though I wouldn't keep that much in the house (what if your house burns) there are far safer hiding places as you said.

I remember a story about someone who froze his money inside a slab of ice and kept it in his freezer. At least it won't burn that way.

He will get most of it back, the Reserve Bank would be able to use forensic methods to work out how much is there and he will only need to pay the fee

I keep some money not in the bank. I store it in a safe place though were it cannot be burned, or damaged. Stealing it would be a bit difficult for a regular burglar too. I like having cash on hand.
