Bloody Apple and its obsession with glass screens.

My son literally smashed my HTC Radar on the tiled floor from the bed, and to my amazement not a single scratch :) buy a stronger phone for her.

Gorilla Glass by itself is sufficient. If you need more than that...

I only mentioned Gorilla Glass 2 as previous rumours have suggested that the current screen is using Gorilla Glass already. Whatever it is that Apple is using for the glass screens though, they could certainly be made more "shatter-proof". There's no harm in improving it, right?

Title should be: "Bloody daughter and lack of interest handling fragile objects with care"

Clumsy daughter = lack of parenting now does it?

Some people are clumsy/careless and it has little to do with bad parenting.

If a kid proofs time after time she can't handle fragile objects she shouldn't be allowed to use them anymore. It's that simple. If she bought the product in question with her own money she can deal with the consequences herself. I'm not implying the original poster is a bad parent in general in any way.

Glass screens are one of things that separate the Apple stuff from the cheaper crap on the market. Be more careful is what I say to people. End of. The best quality stuff should always be looked after properly anyway.

No, it's not the user. Apple makes fragile hardware. End of story. The Apple apologists on this thread are sickening.

Every electronic device that incorporates glass can scratch, crack or shatter and as such needs to be handled with care. Not by any means unique to Apple products. You trying to claim otherwise is plain nonsense.

Everyone I know with an iPhone has a crack somewhere on the glass. They have a cases for the phones as well. Hell, I dropped my nieces iPod (latest gen) from 3ft on to tile an the screen shattered. iPods/iPhones are very sensitive to having the glass crack or shatter. I have seen Android dropped from 5ft on on to concrete and they come away with just a minor scratch on the side/plastic.

I dropped my GNEX a few months ago on to concrete and it skipped end over end for a few feet as well. Only a scratch on the corner and the screen is PERFECT. Tho I drop my nieces iPod on to tile and the screen shatters.

Apple's screens are more sensitive and more susceptible to damage than other screens. There are several drop tests/videos proving/showing this as well.

Yes, every screen has the potential to crack....but Apple needs to do something with their screens and why they are breaking so easily.

Last week a guy next to me in the club dropped his Samsung Galaxy S II on the floor and the entire screen cracked instantly. I believe that one runs Android.

Everybody should know that an iPhone glass screen is extremelly poor quality. It breaks so easily. I know a handfull of people with shattered iPhones or iPod, and some of them did not even drop it, it shatered because of a small bump onto a chair etc ..

I dropped my S2 on the concrete without a scratch .. go figures.

Last week a guy next to me in the club dropped his Samsung Galaxy S II on the floor and the entire screen cracked.

So ?? Must have dropped it really bad.

There are a lot of others screens out there that use gorilla glass that do not break as easily. Besides, would rather have a plastic screen that doesnt shatter than a glass screen that does. Yea, can be the most careful person in the world...but everyone messes up at some point. Only takes once as well.

The best quality stuff shouldnt break so easily either. What it is called QUALITY.

Never said it cannot happen to androids. Apple products are more susceptible to it...a lot more susceptible.

Why lots of people/stores sell kits and repair iPhone screens.

I'm typing this on my retina mbp outside and I'm not getting much of a glare (nice sunny day)

And your point is what? This thread isn't about glare, it's about dropping the iphone and the screen breaking.

You got lucky. Big deal.

You by all means pretend YouTube videos posted by random people are the apex of reliability. I've seen similar videos claim the Nokia Lumia 900's screen is next to impossible to scratch. My personal experience with the phone tells a different story altogether.

Yes, every screen has the potential to crack....but Apple needs to do something with their screens and why they are breaking so easily.

I've seen people drop their iPhone 4/4S without a single crack in the screen afterwards. I owned a 2008 iPod touch that was dropped a total of four times, not a single crack either. It just boils down to luck.

Why lots of people/stores sell kits and repair iPhone screens.

That would be because Apple has twice the market share of the runner-up Samsung. Obviously you'll see more cracked iPhones than any other phone model. They're a lot more popular.

Bloody Volvo and their obsession with glass screens! I let my kid drive my car, and when they crashed it into a tree the screen broke! Then, when I had it fixed it, they crashed the car again! Now I have to pay for a new one again!

Yes because making a Windscreen out of Glass, because you actually need to see through it, is the exact same thing as making a phone with 2 Glass sides that shatter easily. I felt my IQ dropping as I read your post.

The problem with the iPhone is that it has bigger corners due to the roundness(hitting a corner is instant shatter), the small bezel and aluminum frame also makes it more fragile because it has practically zero give before the glass. Meanwhile a phone with high quality plastic or polycarbonate with a bigger bezel, will be able to compress far more in the bezel without damaging the casing and absorb much of the impact preventing a shatter of the glass.

Except your own quote isn't really true ;)

On to what kind of surface?

You got lucky. Big deal.

They I, my sisters, my mom, and many other members of my family and fiends are very lucky. I have seen several phones drop and everytime an iPhone is dropped, the screen is cracked. Very rarely is it so that I have seen with other phones.

So use luck for an excuse if you want.

We're going to pretend YouTube videos posted by random people are the apex of reliability? I've seen similar videos claim the Nokia Lumia 900's screen is next to impossible to scratch. My personal experience with the phone tells a different story altogether.

Not random people and you can see clearly what tests are being done and they are the same with each phone. SO deny what your eyes see all you want.

I've seen people drop their iPhone 4/4S without a single crack in the screen afterwards. I owned a 2008 iPod touch that was dropped a total of four times, not a single crack either. It just boils down to luck.

Call it luck all you want....Apple users must be very unlucky then.

That would be because Apple has twice the market share of the runner-up Samsung. Obviously you'll see more cracked iPhones than any other phone model. They're more popular.

No, its called Apple only warranty's the screen (unless you by extended) for 1 year and people do not want to pay twice as much for Apple to fix the screens. SO kits came out to make it cheaper. T here would be no replacement kits if this was not a widespread problem.

And iPhones are the single most popular phone. Not the most popular platform. So more people have Androids than iPhones.

True...and the fact it has 2 glass sides doesnt help either.

Polished stone tiles.

What you're writing here is meaningless to me. For all I care you're making everything up in yet another attempt to discredit Apple in favor of Android.

There's a bigger market for replacement kits because the phone is more popular than any other phone. More phones mean more accidents can occur.

And iPhones are the single most popular phone. Not the most popular platform. So more people have Androids than iPhones.

Hence the reason I was comparing phone manufacturers and phone models rather than platforms as a whole. Try reading more carefully. Not all Android phones have glass panels, which makes a large portion of them incomparable to begin with.

Yup, making it up. I pretty much called my family/friends clusty fools who cannot keep a hold of their devices. So it would make sense i insult my family/friends just so I can prove a point and make Apple look bad. Since there is no videos online or comments from a lot of Apple users on how easily the glass beaks I have to come up with my own excuses and lies.

Now, in all seriousness, Apple has a lot more of a problem than other phones and that was my point. And if you are going to assume/suggest I am a liar, then I am done talking to you. I dont have to agree with you but since I dont, doesnt mean I am lying.

You're right, it's almost three times. (see image below). Of course things can change on a per country basis. Even then Samsung sells phones that don't feature a glass screen.

Sure, why not? It's not like we actually know who they are. Like I said I've seen many videos claiming the Nokia Lumia 900 screen is pretty much impossible to scratch, I know from personal experience that's not really true either. The image the internet portraits isn't always reality, that's my point.

Are those made of gorilla glass? How do you even crack that ****?

I've dropped my phone (gorilla glass) several times onto concrete, ceramic tile, etc and don't even have a scratch on the screen. I don't use protectors or a case.

Gorilla glass was used pre iPhone 4. I believe they use a diff kind of glass now. Not exactly sure what it is.

My niece wanted an iPod but I wouldnt by her one until she proved she could take care of it. Also, she was a little young for one. So I got her a Sansa MP3 player at first. She kept that for a long time and it still works so I got her an iPod. Made her at least get a bumper for it in case she dropped it. She takes really good care of it now.

I think this is very relevent: I once dropped a few glasses as a kid (the drinking kind) with various liquids in accidentally, some broke and others did not. Now, that leads me onto the current scene in terms of waste of paper and packaging, it's an utter disgust! Rats, rats, rats...

Have you ever heard of an Otter Box Defender Series case? They work.

Only think I ever used was a screen protector. Never a case. You buy a phone because its thin and fits in your pocket and has a good look to it. Then a case ruins all of that. I RARELY drop my things anyway so I am not to worried myself. Just figured that with todays tech, phone companies can make tougher devices
