Confused about the future of Zune software and Windows Phone

Recommended Posts

So on a basic level, Microsoft Zune software us akin to the iTunes software.

If I'm not mistaken, Zune as a brand is dead, including it's software suite, currently used as the PC > Windows Phone link.

Although over the air update is coming with Windows Phone 8 - what's the plan for future PC software? Will there simply be none at all? If so, what will this mean for Windows Phone 7 devices, just using the current version of Zune? If there is something fresh coming have I missed it, or will it simply be somehting like the current Zune software rebadged as Windows Phone software or something?

From what I understand, Windows Phone 7.5 devices will continue to be updated via the Zune software. A new application will be released for Windows Phone 8, but that app won't support Windows Phone 7.5.

It would be nice to get a new Zune client rebranded as Xbox Music or whatever, but I don't think it's going to happen.

The way WP8 works now I think any media player can be used or updated to sync your files to it. The metro and desktop apps at this point are basic and I think they're just temporary fixes. In the end I think the Xbox music app will find itself replacing Zune and these WP8 sync apps in time.

Was anything released for Windows Phone 8 or is it still Zune based?

my Ativ S opens up like a hd when you plug it in. No software needed. Simple drag and drop into proper folders.

If I don't have Zune installed, my Lumia does the same, and I prefer it that way, but copying photos to the phone results in some weird unknown name / location when I check them on the phone

I'm not a fan of syncing apps, much prefer the manual way

But Microsoft wants to keep Windows Phone 7.8 as a low end platform. They said this earlier. How can you keep a platform and leave its complementary software outdated?

Some of my albums didn't have covers but I stopped syncing my own music now that I have xbox music pass and unlimited data plan.
