2 girls, ages 12 and 13, face felony for fake Facebook account

Two girls, ages 12 and 13, were arrested on a felony charge after creating a fake Facebook page impersonating a 12-year-old classmate. They used the page to send threatening messages.

The girls, students at a middle school in Granbury, Tex., were detained on July 16, and charged with online impersonation, a third-degree felony.

“The juveniles were using the fake Facebook page to make threats towards other students and cultivated a bad reputation for the victim,” according to a Hood County Sheriff’s Department statement, which continues, saying that the girls “caus[ed] the victim to endure threats from other students” and be “rejected by her peers.”

According to Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds, who spoke to local media in the week following the arrest, this marks the first arrest in the area related to the online impersonation law, enacted by Texas in 2009.

“This is similar in every way to identity theft,” Deeds said on local access show Granbury TV. “Normally on an identity theft case,” the thief will take an identity and “use it for financial gain,” Hood said. “This was just to try and get back at a person, and ruin them socially, so it’s a big deal.”

To go along with that the two girls should be forced to state specifically what they did in front of their entire school so everyone will know exactly what went on. I doubt that would happen though.

Facebook should go back to its over-18 policy.

Yup...because anyone under 18 won't think of selecting <= 1994 as their birth year.

Well this is misleading. They did not have felony charges for having a fake profile. They did it with cyber bullying. Yeah I think they should be made to go in front of the student body and say sorry too.

A felony, though? That's way too much for what they did.

(or is that /s?)

Nope, seems about right. And they should publicly apologize at their School as well. This is not something people should be lenient about.

Since when did they have that policy?

If they decided to make it over 18's only, they will just get somone older to create an account for them or there will be over 18's selling acocunts etc.

Since it became a social network that does more than just cater to university students. Technically though that means that the policy has been in place since Facebook's debut, seeing as you are normally 18 when you go to Uni.
