ATLANTA ?- The Facebook pages of several major league baseball teams, including that of the Marlins, were hacked Thursday afternoon. In some cases existing content was replaced with status updates ranging from mildly amusing to downright vulgar.

According to Deadspin, the Marlins' page announced: "Just a reminder tonight is FREE PITBULL NIGHT at Marlins Park. The first 10,000 fans ages 18 and under will receive a free rescued fighting Pitbull courtesy of the Dade County Animal Rescue League." :woot:

Pit bulls are banned in Miami-Dade County, which is why free agent acquisition Mark Buehrle, a pit bull owner, found a residence in Broward.

MLB Advanced Media released the following statement: "For a brief moment today, a few MLB Club Facebook accounts were hacked and inappropriate material was briefly on display from those Clubs' pages on Facebook. MLB Advanced Media oversees these Facebook pages on behalf of the Clubs and regrets this occurrence. We are working with Facebook, Major League Baseball Security and, where appropriate, legal authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding this situation."

Facebook in its statement said: "Recently, several Pages made unauthorized posts as a result of actions from a single rogue administrator of these Pages. Our team responded quickly and worked with our partners to eliminate the spam caused by this attack. This was an unique, isolated incident and we are always working to improve our systems to better protect our users and their data."

Other teams impacted included the Giants, White Sox, Padres, Nationals, Angels, Braves, Yankees and Cubs. The Yankees' page had a message that read: "We regret to inform our fans that Derek Jeter will miss the rest of the season with sexual reassignment surgery. He promises to come back stronger than ever in 2013 as Minnie Mantlez."

The Cubs via their official Twitter feed sent out the following messages: "The #Cubs and #Yankees Facebook accounts were hacked and inappropriate messages were posted on both pages moments ago" and "We apologize if you viewed this message. We're looking into what happened with the league and Facebook."

By game time Thursday night, the timeline on the Marlins' page, which has more than 278,000 likes, was clear of the tomfoolery.
