What's the best notetaking tablet?

Recommended Posts

OK I tried asking a similar question about a year ago, but there was nothing very suitable available then. But what is currently in Neowin members views, the best note taking tablet on the market? I need one for an accademic setting. I had a look at some videos of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and this looked ideal. However I don't seem to be able to buy one anywhere. I vaguely remember something about a spat between Apple and samsung over a Samsung tablet, so I assume that maybe this is why?

Does anyone have any other similarly useful suggestions?

Is 10.1 the sort of size you are after, or would something smaller be acceptable?

Also, where do you live?

I'd go with the Surface Pro, because it's got OneNote MX and that cool pen. But then again, it's probably going to be a lot closer to the $1000 mark then you're looking for :)

I use my Thinkpad X201 tablet with the digitiser pen and OneNote. Maybe you should wait for the MS Surface Pro tablet?

Yeah I've kind of had it with lugging heavy tablet convetables around with me. Something lightweight and fun to use would be cool I think.

Thanks but I'm looking for something I can buy now, not something untested and currently unavailable.

Lol, can I delete dumb and unfunny posts on Neowin? I need an *electronic* tablet, as due to a disability, it will hopefully help me keep my notes organised.

I feel you here but really dont' think you have any other options. best note taking devices are going to be the convertible tablet pcs. I say that mostly because you can't really run a good version of onenote on anything else. also the capacitive displays make it harder to write with a pen and have your palm on the screen. I tried writing with an Spen on a galaxy tab and it was a nightmare....

since you can't wait for windows 8 tablets ( they would at least give you onenote) I suggest getting the lightest convertible tablet you can. make sure it comes with a digitizer pen, nothing else is as good with note taking (IMO).

It was a joke. The galaxy 10.1 is a great tab. I used to own one, but sold it because i actually hardly ever used it.

There are no good note taking tablets out yet. unless you go for a tablet PC.

I hear samsung will come out with a tablet size version of the note soon. but honestly in that case, it's much better to wait for any of the new X86 Win8 tablets that will come with an actual digitizer, or see if any of the WinRT tablets will come with a digitizer.

So why are resistive screens better than capacitive screens for digitiser input? Could this be solved by maybe somehow combining the best properties of both?

Digitizer screens are the most accurate because only the pen will activate them. Capacitive is second best in my opinion because any part of your body(or pen) that touches it will make it work. the problem is unwanted parts of your body touching the screen while working with a pen. pressure sensitive or resistive screens are the worst because they often miscalculate the point of highest pressure and we often don't put the most pressure exactly where we want to touch. If they reduce sensitivity then you get the same problem as capacitive displays.

resistive is definitely more accurate than capacitive (you can use a hard point on resistive screens but capacitive screens only trigger with a sufficiently large blob), but neither will provide you very good writing experiences.

I will recommend you to go for galaxy tablet 10.1. It would be smart bet to for note taking, as it is kind of smart and simple to use. My friend had bought one and it is really magical.
