Drunk man snoozes in dumpster, gets picked up, compacted

Recommended Posts

PORTLAND -- A man who decided he was too drunk to drive early Friday morning chose instead to crawl into a recycling dumpster at a Southeast Portland bar, only to be picked up by a hauler and twice compacted.

The man had been drinking at Club 205 when he chose the container to spend the night instead of a drunken drive home, said Lt. Robert King.

The club's regular trash hauler showed up sometime after 1 a.m. The truck emptied the recycling container and continued on its route, twice compacting the load, King said.

When the truck reached Mall 205, the Waste Management worker discovered the man in the truck, King said. He had suffered minor injuries and was taken the hospital by ambulance at about 2:45 a.m.

Waste Management spokeswoman Jackie Lang said the driver did everything he could to help the man, including initial treatment. The driver had to convince the man not to walk away as he wished, but to stay and get proper medical attention.

Lang said the driver was shaken up by the incident.

I thought these dumpster trucks were supposed to really compact the trash down? How does this guy get compacted twice and only suffer minor injuries?

I have to say that I applaud this guy for not driving drunk. It was a bad decision to sleep in a dumpster (for many reasons), but at least he didn't make the terrible decision to drink and drive. I'm glad he wasn't killed.

That being said, I have never been drunk enough to think, "hmm, I think I'll sleep in a dumpster." The smell alone would probably sober me up right away.

right? i thought it got crushed into cubes... i mean, not like they do at the drop off places, but enough to make room for more stuff in the truck

I would have gotten into the back of my car, locked the doors, and slept there instead, no matter how drunk.

Not being a driver, that didn't enter my head. But you're absolutely right, aside from anything else it has to be more comfortable on the back seats than on top of bin bags...

Some places can still charge you with DUI if you are drunk and anywhere close to the vehicle regardless if the keys are even in the ignition, or they can get you for 'camping' in your car. It's messed up laws designed to get drunk drivers who pretend that they weren't driving or going to drive. Most businesses around here padlock their dumpsters when they are not accessing them (The disposal company shares a key) so this wouldn't be too much of an issue if the bins were locked as a matter of policy. Remotely controlled locks operated from the dumptruck would be the technologically cool solution to this problem to keep drunks out of the bins, as this problem seems to happen from time to time.

Bingo man, one of my friends got her DUI for just getting into her car, parked and not in the driver's seat.

Here you can be in the drivers seat drunk, but as long as your keys are not in the ignition then you won't get a DUI. Also you shouldn't have gotten that close to driving in the first place.
