casper2
Source: kotaku The Neo Geo Returns This December (For $200!) Remember in January how everyone got a little excited about the official return of the Neo Geo brand, via a new handheld system called the NEOGEO X GOLD? Yeah, well, it might be time to get a little less excited. Because the thing costs $200. That's right. For a small handheld that plays a bunch of games that are 15-20 years old, you'll be paying almost as much as you would a modern system from the likes of Sony or Nintendo. I mean, sure, it comes with a bunch of pre-installed games (see below), a rather fetching replica arcade joystick and a docking station (that doubles as a video out station), but still, $200? They're crazy. Confirming specs first listed earlier this year, the NEOGEO X GOLD handheld itself will boast a 4.3" LCD screen, a headphone jack and an "expandable game card slot". The pre-installed games on the handheld are: 3 COUNT BOUT LEAGUE BOWLING ART OF FIGHTING II MAGICIAN LORD ALPHA MISSION II METAL SLUG BASEBALL STARS II MUTATION NATION CYBER LIP NAM 1975 FATAL FURY PUZZLED FATAL FURY SPECIAL REAL BOUT - FATAL FURY SPECIAL THE KING OF FIGHTERS '95 SAMURAI SHODOWN II KING OF THE MONSTERS SUPER SIDEKICKS LAST RESORT WORLD HEROES PERFECT It'll be out worldwide on December 6. M_Lyons10
Is this the same company or was the brand picked up by someone else? I'm kind of lost, this is the first I'm hearing of this...

Not really, the original company was SNK but they went bankrupt and were bought out by a company called Playmore. I don't know who they expect to buy this for that much. I'd rather just buy an original Neo Geo if I wanted to play those games, and you can emulate all of them on most consoles now or even on the original XBox or Dreamcast. I don't see this doing well, it'll probably sink the company.
neufuse Veteran Posted August 14, 2012 Veteran Share Posted August 14, 2012 Put every game ever made for it on there and give it to me for $300 and we'll talk Glassed Silver 1 Share
HawkMan
considering the technology in it, the price seems fair. the screen is what cost most anyway.
threetonesun
I dunno, relic hardware is pretty cool. Also the Neo Geo was boss back in the day, and some of those games are classics (Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown, King of Fighters...).
The King of GnG
Just give me a single good reason why I should purchase this... "thing" instead of playing my Neo Geo ROMs under MAME. With an arcade-style joystick, of course :-D P.S.No, the fact that the console is "legal" isn't a reason good enough: I've wasted so much coins on the old machines that I've earned the right to possess all the ROM images I want for the rest of my life :-P
Glassed Silver
Sorry, but I must say emulators seem like a better deal. I like that such systems get revived, it's an excellent tribute to retro gaming, I wished they'd offer devices to port over your old game saves. (Something that I think should be possible for any game and any system, it's basically why I'm leaning towards PC/Mac gaming again, also due to Steam! :p) Glassed Silver:mac
TruckWEB
We are FAR from the Atari Flashback "console" that were sold a couple of years ago for.... $49.... They came with tons of games too. I don't know if there is an emulator for the NeoGeo for the Nintendo DS, but it would be more cost effective....!!!
