Here's the deal.

I currently have the desktop and netbook in my signature. I'm finding myself using my desktop less and less. Only usually for photo editing or work in InDesign. I love the size of my netbook, but its not quite powerful enough to handle my main computing. Just my everyday browsing, typing, video watching etc.

I have a chance to get a Sony Vaio Ultrabook with the 3rd gen i5 3317u, Intel 4000 graphics, 500gb+32GB SSD, 13.3" for $550.

Last time I got rid of my desktop, I came back and built another within 6 months as my laptop wasn't powerful enough. Seeing as little as I use my desktop now though, I'm not sure. I think the i5 3317u is nearly as powerful as my Athlon x4 desktop, and I'm even more sure that the Intel 4000 is more powerful than the 9500GT

Am I being stupid and just should keep what I have and save $500 or sell off my netbook and desktop and get an ultrabook?

Where are you getting that for $550? Just get that ultrabook, keep you desktop, and sell your netbook.

Student discount, rebate, sony rewards.

I'd be putting out $350-400 then. A little more than I had really wanted to spend.

just get a normal notebook, ultrabooks IMHO aren't worth it atm for their current price and specs

Ultrabooks are awesome. You won't get a better mobile experience, IMO...
To the OP, I'd do it :)

hah, if that's your reasoning why not get one of the Windows Slates, they're even more mobile

the point I'm trying to make is you can get a normal notebook for the same price and have much better hardware (mostly in graphics but the cpus are slightly better clocked than the ultrabooks too)

and honestly a normal notebook isn't all that heavier than an ultrabook, notebooks are just as mobile

It sounds like you've never touched an ultrabook before. There's a reason the MacBook air is so popular.
You can get a normal notebook for the same price, but sacrifice size, build quality, and battery life for negligible performance boosts (for what the OP wants to do)

Seriously, you think a regular notebook is "just as mobile" as an ultrabook? More clues that you've never touched one :) Anyway, I'm just trying to help the OP. Not sure what point you're trying to prove.

Apart from the lack of bulk, I think one of the biggest selling points of an ultrabook is it's elegance in design. I haven't seen many laptops that come close to looking as sleek as a lot of the ultrabooks I've seen. Also, build quality seems very nice in the ones I've tried.
