Deleting mails in GMail using Windows 8 Mail app.

Recommended Posts

So, I am using my GMail account using the mail app in Windows 8. The problem is that when I delete a mail using the app, it remains in the "All Mail" folder in GMail when I access using the web interface. I want the mail app to do the same thing as the web interface, move it to trash and then let me clear it from Trash. And speaking of Trash, it doesn't even show the Trash folder under the [Gmail] section. How do I do it?

This is the default behaviour of Gmail/Google Apps when accessed through Exchange ActiveSync (Which Windows 8 mail uses) - Archive instead of Delete.

Exchange ActiveSync was designed for mobile devices, and as of yet Google have not made an easy way to access this setting from a non-mobile device (or IE10 in Metro/Modern UI).

The solution to this is to access http://m.google.com/sync from a mobile device (eg: Windows Phone IE9 in mobile mode, iPad/iPhone Safari) after you have added the account, and then "WindowsMail" will appear, then you can tick the 'Enable "Delete Email As Trash" for this device.' option.

You can use another device to do this, it does not have to be the same device as you are configuring, and you do not have to configure the device you are using to access this web page for Gmail. You can also spoof the user-agent if you don't have access to another device, there are a Myriad of extensions for Google Chrome and Firefox, etc.

You can also change some other options like 'Enable "Send Mail As" for this device.' and hopefully soon be able to add Additional Calendars.

Also you can't remove entries once the device is no longer in use, it will just build up with as many devices as you have been using. If you have multiple entries, just work off the "Last Sync" date.

I am still using Release Preview so far, things might be a little different for RTM.

That will cost you $10 (or 10 Likes) please :)

That worked, thanks very much! :)

BTW,is there any way to view the Trash folder so that I can clear it from the app itself?
