FRESNO, CA – Federal regulators have shut down a Central California slaughterhouse after receiving undercover video showing dairy cows, some unable to walk, being repeatedly shocked and shot before being killed. :/

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which buys beef for the school lunch program and inspects meat facilities, suspended operations at Central Valley Meat Co. in Hanford, Calif.

The facility slaughters hundreds of cows a day after the cows lose their value as milk producers.

The USDA says it launched an investigation after receiving hours of videotape from animal welfare group called Compassion Over Killing.

The group says an undercover investigator was employed by the slaughterhouse and shot the video during two weeks in July.

Central Valley Meat Co. says in a statement that it would have no immediate comment on the video because it has not seen the footage.

In-N-Out cuts ties with California slaughterhouse

FRESNO, Calif. – A major fast food retailer has severed its ties with a Central California slaughterhouse being investigated to see if beef from sick cattle entered the human food supply.

In-N-Out Burger bought beef from the Central Valley Meat Co. of Hanford, Calif., until the U.S. Department of Agriculture closed the plant Monday after receiving a video authorities said showed inhumane treatment.

That is just uncalled for. I hope that company is forced to stop those practices.

I just don't see how some humans have so little care for animals.

I wouldn't treat even a cow that way. :/

^ If it makes you feel any better, people don't treat each other much better than that either.

Sadly, you are correct. Sometimes we treat other humans worse than we treat animals.

USDA, McDonald's suspend slaughterhouse buys

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — The federal government and McDonald's Corp. suspended purchases of meat Wednesday from a California slaughterhouse under investigation for animal cruelty and possible health issues.

The fast-food chain joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture in severing ties with Central Valley Meat Co.

The suspensions occurred after an animal welfare group's covert video showed cows that appeared to be sick or lame being beaten, kicked, shot and shocked in an attempt to get them to walk to slaughter.

"There are behaviors in the video which appear to be unacceptable and would not adhere to the standards we demand of our suppliers," McDonald's said in release.

Federal officials say nothing they have seen so far in the video shows meat from cows that may have been sick made it into the food supply, but interviews with employees were ongoing.

While I am sure its good for publicity for McDs and In-n-Out to cut ties to the supplier, I am still glad they are doing it. Fines rarely end up hurting large companies because they can afford a one-time payout. but to lose large accounts (McDs) that should def put a dent in their bottom line. Amazes me that stuff like this continues to go on.. I mean.. how many undercover video tapes have we seen over the last 10 years. These companies need to have a better watch over the production line.
