My computer won't go into sleep mode or shut down; how can I fix it?

Recommended Posts

It simply turns off the screen rather than shutting off the entire computer (fans and all components remain on and kill the battery of the laptop). I always have to manually press the power button after shutting it off normally to ensure it is completely powered down. Thank you in advance for your responses.

I am running Windows 7

I am properly shutting it down but it simply won't turn the entire computer off. The fans remain on but the screen turns off.

I haven't disabled any of the shutdown/sleep buttons. They are still there; it simply won't turn off when I click them. It goes through the process of shutting down but doesn't work. The screen goes black but all of the internal components remain on.

Uninstall any mcafee thing if you have on the computer. Reboot and try again. If that doesn't help disable services from msconfig after checking the box for hide microsoft services. Reboot Twice and lemme know if that helps.

Go to command prompt and type the following command:

powercfg ?wake_armed

This will list all devices that are currently able to wake the system, start disabling the devices listed in the device manager like this:

That command did not work; it said "Invalid Parameters"

This happens when services are not closing and something is stopping that to happen. And i work in IT Support so i know all that, just so you know. But make sure you don't have mcafee.

Lots of us work in IT support. While I haven't suggested anything here yet, that doesn't mean that just one of us is right or wrong. It can be a combination of things.

That said, it sounds like other things mentioned earlier, a system service or driver not allowing the machine to enter into a sleep or shutdown mode. I would recommend doing the devicequery as mentioned earlier. It will probably point out some problematic devices for when it comes to sleep & shutdown.

Well nice then. GOOD FOR YOU.

And having said that, the computer resist to shut down when services don't stop, and you are right ' it can be a combination of things'. Can be caused by viruses, programs, antivirus. So keep yourself busy all day buddy.

Well that means that no hardware is causing the computer to wake. It must be a software issue. As others have suggested have you disabled your a/v program and seeing it shuts down?

No attitude is needed. I was pointing out that there's not an objective right answer without collecting more data. Especially when you don't know what software the user has installed and you're already telling them what to uninstall without even knowing if they have it installed.

First thing you do with any issue. Collect data, then start working on the problem once you have an informed view of the situation. Randomly guessing is rarely going to help. You are right about the case where services can prevent sleep & shutdown, which usually shows up when you try to do it as a "This program is preventing shutdown" message. I'll ask about that and we'll see if that's the case. ;)

Agreed with jnelsoninjax, looks like it's not hardware then. At this point it could be a few things. When you're going into shutdown does it ever show something hanging like the dialog that says something similar to "This program is preventing shutdown" if you sit and peek at it for a bit?

At this point I'm wondering about drivers...one of them could be hanging when you try to shutdown. I was having this issue recently with an old TV tuner, but it was actually causing a crash on shutdown... :(

Who showed attitude???

Collect data, if someone knows what is the cause of that issue so why poke your nose to collect data. Maybe that's why i said 'IF' you have Mcafee.

'dylan.cordeiro' This never happens, so don't waste your time on that. ;)

did you try to boot on safe mode and see if Windows can shutdown correctly?

if it does it would be an application software driver

if not , would guess your installation is hosed at his point :|

Edit: Ok I known the cmd said it wasn't hardware related but...

Try unplugging your USB devices and network connection and try shutting down. Maybe something has a network share open? or maybe a USB device is hanging?

If no dice

From another known good computer burn a copy of Windows Defender Offline to CD or flash drive. Power off your system, insert disk, boot up the system and scan it.

If nothing shows up there... post a list of your installed software and try out DriverMax. Let's see what driver updates you have pending.

  • 1 year later...

To Ci7 about the safe mode thing. I'm having the same problems as mentioned for this thread. But its on a desktop I built myself. It was working perfectly for a month and then I moved now I am having these issues. I tried the safe mode thing and it worked the computer shutdown perfectly. But now how would I go about figuring out how to fix the application driver issue and more so which application it would be. (Sorry I'm really new to all of this stuff)

You know thats not what I mean. If you aren't going to give useful advice why bother...I just put a large amount of money into a system it would be nice to know how to get it to even sleep and start up properly...
