My problem with church people is that some of them are hypocrites, pray inside and slay with their mouth and actions outside. I rather behave the best possible outside and stay there as much as I can

Not wading into religious debate, I have no doubt that a person called Jesus existed in the timeframe given. Whether he was "THE Jesus" from the Bible, or that it was a common name and this used as an "everyman" name in the book - I'd argue that In the year 0 there was more likely than not, a man called Jesus who was of Palestine.

Regardless of what you believe, this is not what that verse actually reads, neither is the author of Hebrews THE founder of Christianity.

The actual text is: "If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law."

I'm sure you can make a point without twisting the facts, no?

That quote is apparently from Apostle Paul, whom is the founder.

The authorship of Hebrews is up in the air. And Paul could hardly be called the founder of Christianity. It was a lot more varied than that - there were Jewish Christians, gentiles (Paulines, I suppose), Gnostics, not to mention syncretic groups, like the Manicheans.

?????????????????????????????

What? Do you know anything about the Christian religion and its history? There's a reason the church doesn't speak about the early days of Christianity, that's because when you assemble the facts it shows the likelihood of Jesus ever existing is slim.

That's called a conspiracy theory.

He is rather correct -- The original teachings of Christ are true, however, much of them have been lost.

Christ will soon return to begin another 'version'. ;)

Believing in historical Jesus, is like believing in Atlantis, or the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, or other ancient stories. There's no definite proof they existed but they 'could' have existed. There's a difference between belief and knowledge, something doesn't have to be true to believe in it. I don't see anything wrong with OP's friend's thought process. I don't believe in religion, but I believe a guy named Jesus existed 2000 years ago.

The Bible could be compared to Harry Potter, but it could also be compared to Assassin's Creed.

Was Assassin's Creed true: No.

Were some of the characters in AC real: yes.

First off, who said anything about the Bible? I was talking about historical fact (that a teacher named Jesus existed and was crucified in the early 30s AD. No one said anything else. Any serious scholar will tell you that that is considered to be factual, and that it is attested to by period secular documents.

Secondly, Buddha also existed, although he was quite a bit older than Christ. His name was Siddhattha Gotama, and most historians will back me up on that, too. Santa also existed. His name was Nikolaos of Myra, and he had a broken nose.

All too true. It's there in history books for all to find, if they could but read.

But the history books are wrong! [/s] It's as bad as this, it's just that it's coming from the other end of the spectrum.

I believe Jesus existed, but not the coming back to life etc.....

After that is too much supernatural and religious lark for me, which is all superstition and only for the weak to believe in (IMO)

Probably because He did not die, in the usual sense.

Christ had a 'stand-in', who was deluded (the man thought he was the Messiah), and died on the cross, in His place.

Christ then abandoned His physical body (because few believed He was still alive), and took on a 'psychic' body.

What you think of as 'supernatural' is actually the real condition of the Universe.

"All things are possible with God", is a very true passage in the Bible, and much of which is 'impossible' is only because you Believe so. ;)

Didn't the Quran also have references to Jesus? :p

Yes, because the Quran was written centuries after the bible and borrows heavily from it.

Anyway, so what if Jesus of Nazareth was a real person? He did nothing particularly special - a few boring magic tricks.

He wasn't even the first to come up with the "golden rule", (do unto others...)

It would be great if Jesus did come back. I can just imagine what would happen if he turned up in the Bible Belt. They would probably shoot him for looking like an "Ay-Rab", rather than the Bjorn Borg lookalike they want him to be.

That's called a conspiracy theory.

LOL?

I'm giving up. There's no point in debating with someone who hasn't actually researched his own religion.

As Neil DeGrasse Tyson said:

?One of the biggest problems with the world today is that we have large groups of people who will accept whatever they hear on the grapevine, just because it suits their worldview?not because it is actually true or because they have evidence to support it. The really striking thing is that it would not take much effort to establish validity in most of these cases? but people prefer reassurance to research.?

Or as it was once said...

I believe that the best way to become an atheist is to read the Bible. - Penn Jillette

Isn't the story of Jesus told in the bible, which is a religious book itself?

There is a book called 'Jesus for the non-Religious': http://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Non-Religious-John-Shelby-Spong/dp/0060762071

There are many people who view Jesus as a Buddha like person who was wise but believe, and recently proven correct, that what we see in the form of the bible is little more than 'religion designed by a committee to suit a particular end goal'. Thomas Jefferson had his own bible too - stripped of all the super natural and gets to the core teachings of Jesus.
