Mine is mainly used as a Mumble chat server and a VPN for old games like AoE etc :)

few dollars more? You didn't give us the cost of your lower end system. And not sure I would call 1.25GB ram and 50GB a low end vps any longer ;)

Budman - Yeah - I really don't care to give my prices, but I figured you had seen the price when you went to the link I posted earlier on in the thread.

Nonetheless - you do get what you pay for and in my end, I do still consider it a LEB (Low End Box), because of service issues and continual DDOS attacks etc against their servers which affect this one too.

really - yeah I saw their prices. Not all that great, sure you could find better vps, if they are under constant ddos etc..

yeah you would want tun/tap for openvpn.

yeah you can install openvpn server on dd-wrt, I don't think the mini has it though. STD should have it, and your running an older version to be sure.

http://www.dd-wrt.co...dex.php/OpenVPN

In this section, it is assumed that you already have the DD-WRT installed in your router and that its a current build (newer than 01/2011). OpenVPN is only available on units with at least 8mb flash (except the Broadcom VPN build.)

Here are some instructions for installing on centos for openvz vps

http://tipupdate.com...-on-centos-vps/

man 3.49$ a month is a bit costly for what you got. I got more hdd and more bandwidth and even burst to 256 for only 1.25 a month -- thats like 1/3 of the cost your paying ;)

edit: btw just saw some stock open up on buyvm

https://my.frantech....confproduct&i=0

San Jose - OpenVZ - SJ BuyVM-128MB

128MB OpenVZ Linux VPS

256MB Burstable RAM

15GB Dedicated Space

500GB Premium Bandwidth

If you only want a couple of simultanious users but want a simple setup try openvpn Access server.

http://openvpn.net/index.php/access-server/overview.html

It's nice in you can just browse to it with a web browser and then it downloads a pre-configured openVPN client to your machine, it's also stupidly simple to setup :-)

For sure - I am with a differnt host for the VPS which has not had any downtime for me and has been very good as well. I am paying $19.97 for them who basically have the following ; (Copied from their system)

Bandwidth 1.46 TB Disk Space 50 GB Memory 2 GB Virtualization Type vz.gif (OpenVZ) Burst 4 GB

Not bad for what I get I think. This also has 5 IP Addresses. I am trying to get a hosting business started (I know, very hard to do and so many people doing it that is hard to get in there, I know I know), so won't say who it is through but...with you kids around here, you can find out pretty easy if you look long enough. :)

Anyway, bad plug for my hosting (look below this post and above my name). I am hoping this will turn out to be a good choice in the long run to get started, and then obviously after I get more clients, move on to a bigger system (dedicated server, yada yada). I know I don't have a phone number or chat set up on the site, but will be doing that soon.

You might want to look into reselling as a start vs starting with vps, etc.

Funny you should say that - I was doing that for a while, but was soon hitting the memory limits set by the providers in the resellers end. I have built sites for several businesses which generally serve static content (No problem there), but do have a few that have pretty good levels of content and rather large databases, one being a 5k product e-commerce store. Not that the scripts take up memory so much, but the overall combination of everything going on (12 sites), it was starting to cause stress with the providers. The eCommerce store stakes up about 400mb Ram steadily. With the rest of the sites taking up about 200MB total.

I know I could have gone with groups like inMotion Hosting, Hostgator, etc, and gotten some better hosting there in terms of memory allowances, but with the budget being what it is, I went with VPS. One thing I have found is that a lot are using Cloud Linux. which is great. But, if misconfigured which I seemed to be getting, was actually throttling down my whole hosting account and not just the sub account I had set at the time as a reseller.

Also, I have need of about 2 Dedicated IP's just for SSL's alone. With PCI Scans, site compliance etc, at least a VPS is given favor over shared reseller hosting. Technically, I am a shared hosting provider and the sites I have are on a shared server, but they are not shared on the same container as the hundreds or more on the same server, so security is greater. Plus - if the need should arise to go dedicated, I will have a heck of a lot more experience in this area than say someone who goes from shared/Alpha Reseller to Dedicated and has no idea what to do with the bash shell.

A couple of decades ago, I cut my teeth in shell access in the days before Windows 1.0. I would hardly call it as sophisticated as it is today, but there is something to be said about having some extra low level control over the server when you need it via the SSH. :) You don't always get that with Alpha Reselling or whatever flavor Resellers accounts you may want to purchase.

Not sure who you have been dealing with - but something like rackspace hosting partner programs seems to be more a direction you could of taken where you have access to all of their products to resell, be it dedicated, vps or shared hosting, etc.

I have priced rackspace and while they are sure to be the better host for what I want, my budget won't allow it. My long term plan is to go ahead and upgrade when the time comes to do so to a dedicated server but not until I can do it.

Then of course, buy my own severs and do my own thing etc..

Make it a game server and rent it out :p I would make it a Q3A game server. I actually created a script that shows server status :D

Use noghost mod. This guy rents servers for $20/month.
