On my trillian contact list I have quite a few females, on my Facebook (which also comes in via trillian) list I have quite a few more, but none of them contact me to just say "Hi!" Most of them will start with "Hey, what's up?" only to follow with "I have a computer question about X". It got so bad that when they would say Hi, instead of responding, I would say "What it your question?" They would then proceed to say "Well.. i have X problem".

When you let everyone know you are good with computers. They will suck you dry with free support. So the question is "How many females on your IM list contact you to say Hi not Hi can you help me!?"

All of them

I brutally trim people like that.

There's a difference between being a friend with a computer issue and an issue with a computer.

And this is why, next time I move, first thing I'll do is print up business cards with my name and a logo, and hourly rates for computer repair. So if anyone asks, I'll hand them my card. Either they shut up and leave me alone (good), or they pay me (also good).

I don't chat with girls on the internet anymore though so the question is moot for me.

Good Catch! I didn't add that as an option because sub contentiously I probably thought they didn't exist!

lol

voted 0; my female friends don't ask for help via IM, but in person or by phone (still very few); note that i called them friends and those are the ones that truly are; there are other females that ask me for help but they rarely talk to me or even care to say a hello so they are just acquaintances; friends are hard to get and even harder to maintain.

Well, it's not just females, but I do have quite a few "friends" who only talk to me for what I can help them with. Fact of life, I guess...

I don't use IM's any more, partly for this reason. When you have a "friend" that is computer savvy, why pay the outrageous prices for IT?

There's one "internet" friend that I'm still in contact with via email and the last time I heard from them, they asked if I knew how to crack passwords. I replied Maybe, maybe not, but I don't bend that way.

None of them because none of them know that I know computers.

Indeed :s

That's why I now reply (in fact, to everyone) with "Hi. How can you help me?"

None of them contact me just to ask for help and if they do have a problem they come to me and pay (their choice not mine!) but I give them mates rates.

Not many, most friends I have are actually friends, who I wouldn't care if I need to help them out. I try avoid the "old friends" from years ago who randomly IM me and ask for a pc fix. You know immediately too, there would be no other reason to talk to them.

I don't use any form of IM, apart from actually talking to people. Then I do get people asking for help, but they usually buy me a few beers for helping.

Some people are just like that, though. I know a guy with a pickup truck and he has a lot of folks who only ever talk to him when they need help moving house or bringing home a large purchase. If you have a skillset or something useful, there are always a few who will just use you. The trick is not letting yourself fall into it too badly if it's a drain on you. Most of the time I don't mind helping people, and if I do, I just say I have too much going on at the moment.
