New Jersey teen sticks head out of party bus, dies

FORT LEE, N.J. ? A teenager headed to a Sweet 16 party was killed after he stuck his head out of the emergency hatch of a double-decker bus and hit the underside of a highway overpass, police said.

Daniel Fernandez, of Sayreville, N.J., was among 65 teens aboard the bus Friday night as it crossed the George Washington Bridge from New York City, said Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The accident occurred at the Fletcher Avenue overpass of Interstate 95 at about 6:30 p.m.

Alex Franco, a security guard on the bus, told the Daily News that he had warned the teens to leave the hatch alone.

"I told them not to open the hatch, like three or four times, but kids, they don't understand," he said.

Franco said he went downstairs to tell the driver that it was getting too hot.

"It was very hot. Everybody was dancing. Two, five minutes I was downstairs," he said. "Then I heard two guys screaming, `Oh, my God, oh, my God."'

Designer Transportation, which operates the bus, expressed its "deepest heartfelt sympathy" for the boy's family. It says it plans to conduct an internal investigation.

Result of internal investigation: Teen was an idiot and paid for it with his life.

This is no ones but his fault, though I understand they have to do it anyway. And they may even fire and blame the security guy just so they appear to have someone to blame and push it on so they're not stuck with it.

What's there to investigate? The kid was a ****ing moron and deserves a Darwin Award nomination. Good thing he didn't get to breed yet.

It's new jersey, I'm sure by now he's got his fair share of guid-ettes running around.

Fact: I've lived in New Jersey all my life & have never met anyone remotely similar to the characters in Jersey Shore. I'm glad the show was cancelled, it was a disgrace to our already-made-fun-of-enough state...

Well, it was the teens fault but shouldn't the bus line have some sort of official on both levels of the bus?

Why? Normal buses have only the driver, so to have a supervisor on each level seems grossly excessive. Still, that is what the investigation should determine - whether could more have reasonably been done to prevent such an incident. If the supervisor was already aware that kids were messing with the emergency hatch then that is obviously a cause for concern, though the fault obviously lies primarily with the kid involved. If there was alcohol involved and that was tolerated by the supervisor then he should face disciplinary action.

Why? Normal buses have only the driver...

I can see that on a single level bus but not on a double decker. If those buses have only drivers, then all kind of stuff can happen on the second level without anyone's knowledge.

^ His death happened for a reason -- it was not simply coincidental, or an accident. ;)

Is this some sort of conspiracy theory? Or you're into that whole 'fate' stuff... ?
