Cats thrown over animal refuge centre wall

A total of 14 cats have been thrown over the wall of an animal refuge centre in Lochen, Austria, during the summer holidays.

The cats believed to be unwanted were thrown over the fence of the Pfotenhilfe refuge centre by as yet unknown persons.

The animal refuge centre said this is not an isolated incident and increasing numbers of unwanted animals are being dumped at the refuge.

But they claim that it is extremely rare that animals would be thrown over the fence of the refuge in such a manner.

Director Maria Griebl said that over the past three week fourteen cats - ten kittens and four adult cats have been thrown over the fence.

One of the cats had a large tumour on its foot and needed immediate veterinary treatment.

She said: "I am completely speechless at the way people just throw away the animals like unwanted goods.

Many of the smaller animals were reported to be severely traumatised by the incident.

It is a known fact that 25 per cent more animals are abandoned in the holiday period than at other times.
