NC man hands out birthday money at busy intersection

On his 57th birthday, Bob Blackley gave away his gift money to total strangers.

Carrying a sign that read, "I have a job. I have a home. Could you use an extra $5?" Blackley, a retired teacher, darted through traffic and handed out $5 bills to motorists at a busy intersection in Winston-Salem, N.C., WXII-TV reports.

"Why?" a grateful woman asked as she accepted the cash from Blackley.

"Because it's my birthday," Blackley responded.

"So you're giving things away?" she asked.

"Yup. Please take it quick or I'm going to get run over."

Blackley, the television station points out, wanted to make this birthday special by helping others. In a few hours he had handed out $285 he received in birthday money. Then his wife, Carol, came with an envelope of cash. She had promised to match his amount should he need it. And so Blackley continued demonstrating his generosity.

"I think this is a blessing," a smiling driver said as he held up the $5 bill. "It's going into the gas tank."

"I hope people pay it forward," Carol Blackley said. "This is what it's all about."

Bob Blackley said he'll do it again next year, for his 58th birthday.
