upgraded to new WP7 handset

Recommended Posts

For the past 10 months ive been using a 1st Gen WP7 device (Samsung Omnia 7) now firstly i love the handset but t-mobile UK wasn't pushing updates for it and i was stuck with the keyboard disappearing bug.

So i decided to get myself a Nokia Lumia 800 and I love it even more, ok ive taken a little hit on the smaller screen (form 4" down to 3.7") doesn't sound a lot but when you are used to it lol.

First impressions are great, just spent the last hour or so updating it to 8773 amd redownloading all my apps, with a few new ones

I managed to get ?99 trade in for my Omnia 7 which i was surprised about so it only cost me ?75 for the Lumia :D

Why didn't you just wait for WP8? It's right around the corner? Granted phone prices when first released won't be cheap, but at least you'd have the latest and greatest!

Nice, lots of people who have a Lumia 800 or 900 love em. I could question why you didn't try to hold out until November and get a newer 820 or 920 with WP8 but hey, I'm sure you have it worked out already.

just got a lumia 800 today, was going to wait for the 820 but decided to get the 800 now and get the 8 20 in 6 months or so when prices drop.

mind you im coming from windows 6.5

Welcome, I think with the support Nokia has with the 7.x phones going forward that (unless there's something specific hardware wise/app wise) that you could find yourself sticking with the 800 longer. But heck, in 6 months, if nokia does what they've said in the past, we could be talking about a 830/930 coming up which would drop the 820/920 prices even lower.

I've got the 710 and it's great but I think I`m going to be investing in an 8/920

Would recommend the Lumia 710? Or would suggest I go for a newer / better model? I'm looking at upgrading my phone at Xmas and have been looking at the 710.

If you don't want to spend more on the high end, like the 920, since you've been looking at the 710 so far, I'd say save a bit more and get the 820. I expect Nokia to do a 720 as well but dunno when, that could come 3 months after in late January or early February if they stick to their 3 month release plan with WP8.

Yea I'd highly recommend it, the hardware inside does not differ that much from the 800 but the price tag does, great, fast phone and the only drawbacks I have found are with the OS not the phone, things that hopefully will be solved in WP7.8 such as BT File Transfer

Comparison between 800 and 710 here

EDIT - If I did have to pick a fault with the hardware it would be storage, I do notice only having 8GB (5.9GB usable)

Not so much since resetting my phone because I have already tested a good selection of apps and know which are worth installing and which are not, but when I first got it I was out of space pretty quickly

and battery could do with a better capacity but you can fit higher capacity batteries in the phone, I just haven't bought one yet

Thanks GP007, am actually waiting for the release date and pricing of the 820 before jumping in and getting the 710.

Thanks, I don't store much on my phone, I have a 4GB card in my current phone and it's practically empty. I like what I've seen of the 710 and Windows Phone so think that's way I'm going. Problem is I'm looking at mobiles now and I know I won't be able to afford the new mobile till Christmas but I'm itching to get it so I can play lol

:D I know what you mean, I dipped into the rent to get mine, keep your eye on the carphone warehouse, they seem to have the cheapest and best deals on them, they were down to ?89 a couple months ago for a 7 day deal

?99 atm

http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/pay-as-you-go/deal-finder?manufacturer=NOK001

Need a ?10 top up with them, but I think you can get away with that if you have another sim to put in (They take the new MicroSIMs )

Thats a good question, and I'm going to assume it wasn't being sarcastic.

A few months ago, I was at my girlfriend's parents for the weekend visiting. Her mother wanted my number and I gave it to her, she entered it into her android phone and then text me to confirm the number was mine and so I could add the number to my contacts list. At the time my girlfriend was reading a book on my Windows Phone and she saw the message pop up, and was trying to reply back.

Firstly, when I told her mum my phone already had her number and contact information and there was no need to add her number from the sms she was confused. I had to explain that the contact details she provided on her facebook profile were being used. Next, when my girlfriend didn't want to text her mum back due to sms charges (being in the same room lol). she was prompty told by her mum to load up the windows live or facebook app to do so, and it'd be free as we were connected to the wifi network... this again confused them when I had to tell them facebook and windows live messenger was build in to the messages and there isn't a need for the "there's an app for that" mentality anymore.

Its just little things like that, where we don't need an extra app for something that is the same thing just different platforms. Apple coined the term there's an app for that and people have brought into that idea of how smart phones should be for far too long.. and I mean that in the sense that you don't need an app to see somethings, sometimes you can do with a live tile and that itself is a hole different topic :)

but yeah, to answer your original question.. I use a few apps, but the features most people use their smartphones for,. they're built in to the OS. The rest... if you manage to sort out the boob and fart machine apps, there are some good nuggets that are actually useful for non-generic things.

710 is a great little phone for the price but battery life is on the weaker side (but will almost get you through the day) and display is kind of dull.

The messaging stuff bugs me out when friends/family on iOS/Android insist on using stuff like WhatsApp. I try to drag them to facebook or messenger instead (doesn't always work). I am going to press for WP around me so that I don't have to bother about running apps for simple things like this. I wish WP8 allows for app/service integration in messaging and they just bundle in things like WhatsApp. :p
