Friend bought this game -- activation key is supposed to be in the box, but isn't.

All there are, are trial keys.

What should he do ?

Yeah, return it, it's supposed to come with an activation key. That part, is, essentially the bit you've paid for.. and you haven't got it.

The key is on either a manual or on a sticker on the casing. For me, it's on a white sticker just above the CD. Look for a sticker that might have fallen off and gotten stuck somewhere. (EU version (GB), standard CD/DVD-case with one DVD inside and then stuck into a fancy piece of paper casing.
Bring it back to the shop. If they somehow can figure out which key it actually is, they'll lock that key. You/he should get a new one. Otherwise, I don't know. They (the publisher) must have a way to tell which key is bound to what box/CD. Maybe some psychopath stole the sticker. Or, the shop got screwed and got sold lots of invalid Starcraft-boxes that lack keys.

^ Yeah, he's returning it to K-Mart, for an exchange.

Thanks.
