Dieting dachshund looks to trim its 77 pounds

PORTLAND, OR ?- A portly pooch in Portland is in a dog fight with his weight, and his owner has kicked off a Facebook campaign to chronicle the 77-pound dachshund's battle to slim down.

Nora Vanetta said she adopted Obie after she learned that his elderly owners could no longer care for him due to their failing health, the New York Daily News reported.

According to the newspaper, Vanetta, a veterinary technician, conducted an examination of Obie and determined that he weighed more than twice as much as a healthy dachshund should. So she put him on a weight-loss regimen and started the "Biggest Loser, Doxie Edition" page on Facebook to drum up support and track the chunky canine's efforts to shed 40 pounds.

"He is extremely sweet and loving," Vanetta posted to the page. "He was obviously loved and is a joy to work with. The aging owners just couldn't say no to those big brown eyes."

Vanetta wrote that Obie's new routine consists of dieting and hydrotherapy -- since he is still too obese to exercise.

"We are very overwhelmed but we are managing. Obie went to the vet today and got a clean bill of health. We are going to do some antibiotics just to make sure his skin doesn't get infected on his chest. According to their scale he has lost 6 pounds since Aug. 19 so about 2 pounds a week which is perfect," Vanetta posted on Monday.

Supporters of Obie's efforts can donate funds through PayPal on his Facebook page. Vanetta said all funds will go toward the plump dog's veterinary and weight-loss costs.
