Project Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment

Recommended Posts

Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur?s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.

Combat uses a tactical real-time with pause system - positioning your party and coordinating attacks and abilities is one of the keys to success. The world map is dotted with unique locations and wilderness ripe for exploration and questing. You?ll create your own character and collect companions along the way ? taking him or her not just through this story, but, with your continued support, through future adventures. You will engage in dialogues that are deep, and offer many choices to determine the fate of you and your party. ?and you'll experience a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out.

The project has hit its 1,1 M$ initial goal in just 24 hours and is still going strong. Obsidian has announced several stretch goals including Linux support. I'm very excited for this project, with names like Chris Avellone, Tim Cain and Josh Sawyer working on a what fits the description of a true successor to Baldur's Gate - much more so than Dragon Age. I think anyone who's played some of the legendary Black Isle games - Fallout 1 and 2, Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate (the latter developed by Bioware) should be very excited about this.

Update: the game will be based on the Unity Engine (Mono, C#) and will definitely have a Linux version. http://www.kickstart...ty/posts/312639

This is great news. Usage of a mature, well-known and documented, cross-platform technology means more time spent adding content and features, and less time hunting for bugs and testing the game with every possible OS/hardware combination. It looks like they'll really be making the best out of their relatively small budget, and we may see a large world with tons of quests and character customization. Did I say I'm excited?
