So I screwed up App Store updates on my fiance's MBA...

Recommended Posts

My fiance bought a MBA a few weeks ago for school and asked me to set it up. I was the first to turn it on, and I created my account first and her account second. Both are administrative accounts. Consequently, since I was the first to create an account her built in apps that came with her MBA got locked to my Apple ID somehow (iMovie, iPhoto, etc).

So now whenever these apps need to be updated, her App Store won't let her update them. It says that I have to log in and update the apps for her. Is there anyway for me to fix this? Its really annoying her.

Thanks.

Why the hell would you put your name first on her laptop?

  1. Launch System Preferences by clicking its icon in the Dock.
  2. Click the ?Accounts? icon to open the Accounts preferences pane.
  3. Click the lock icon. You will be asked to provide the password for the administrator account you are currently using. Enter your password, and click the ?OK? button.
  4. Select a Standard user account from the list of user accounts.
  5. Place a check mark in the ?Allow user to administer this computer? box.

If i remember right there is also a "special" admin account you can select....or is that linux....idk...Ill look at my mac when i'm home.

Edit: Reread. There is no way to untie them from your apple id. If anything call Apple and explain the issue. They are the only ones able to help.

She already is an administrator. She can install OS X updates, just not iMovie and iPhoto updates (there may be others...).

I signed in first under my name because, well, idk why. I didn't think it would make any difference to be honest with you. An admin is an admin. There were some apps I had purchased on the app store that I wanted to install on her new MBA (Pixelmator, and Delicious Library). I also thought that it came with Lion and not ML so I wanted to install that but then I noticed it was ML.

She registered the hardware under her Apple ID and information. This is the only issue we are having. I've thought about deleting my admin account, but then she may never be able to update iMovie and iPhoto :p. Blah.

It would make sense to me that the apps that are MY apps (Pixelmator and Delicious Library) would require me to login in order to update. But I didn't think that the software that came with the Mac would cause any problems. Guess I was wrong.

I hope that, like in iOS 6, the App Store stops asking for credentials on updates. That would solve our problem.

Right. The apps themselves are tied to your Apple ID. Updates are always going to require passwords. Ya know, if I were you, just TPB iLife and uninstall the ones tied to your account. Install the ones you downloaded. Apple does not use DRM so you should just be able to drag and drop. :)

Disclaimer: I don't approve of piracey, it's just "out there".

Downloading media off the Internet that you own a license for is not piracy ;).

That's a good idea. I don't even think she uses any of these apps, it just bothers her that she can't click "update all" w/o be bothered by some dialog box.

If you installed YOUR apps, you need to sign in. If you don't want to sign in, then remove YOUR apps.

Either buy the apps in her name or do not install them.

That's absolutely ridiculous because:

1. We are in the same household and use each others Macs all the time. I might be using her mac and need access to my Apps.

2. Apple allows up to 5 machine installs of App Store apps

3. If they REALLY cared about it they would lock down computer accounts that weren't signed in under the same Apple ID credentials

Why don't you go bother some people who are REALLY breaking the law like jay walkers ffs.

Oh man, those jaywalkers... Hide yo' kids, hide yo' wife.

lol. He's probably outside right now monitoring his street for illegal jaywalking activity... Seems like the type who grew up being the captain of the hall monitor squad at school.

I've read through the Apple Store TOS, what I'm doing is absolutely legit because we both technically own the computer. We are part of the same household.

Now, if we weren't part of the same household that would be different. But that is not the case.

Apple allows you to link up to 5 Macs with your Apple ID. Next time do some research on what the actual license agreements are before telling others what to do.

Just sign in with your ID? That is what I have always done.

To clarify.

Sign out of the app store with her ID.

Click Sign In.

Choose Use Existing ID or whatever the verbiage is.

Enter your ID.

Install Apps and/or App Updates.

Sign out of your ID.

Sign back into hers.

I do it all the time with my work Apple ID and my personal Apple ID on the same computer.

Oh good point. I guess I don't have to login to my profile...

Yeah it is annoying but it absolutely works. Same thing works on iPads as well.

At one point in time I has 2 separate partitions for each account, but that was on my older Macbook through work. I recently got a new one, and I decided to just have one user account this time around.

So I face this issue quite a lot., in fact happened to me just the other day. I was signed into my work account, App Store told me I had updates for the iWork suite of apps IIRC, and it would not let me update until I signed out of my work ID and into my personal one, which was the ID I used for purchasing those apps.

This may not work, but if you do Internet Recovery and wipe the MBA, upon creation of the first account it will see if you can download iLife. That may activate the software with her Apple ID and then you can stop worrying about it.
