What is ProjectSunblock.com?

Recommended Posts

Over the last few weeks or so I've been finding that occasionally a page will take upwards of a minute (sometimes even two) to load. Every time it happens, the culprit seems to be a connection that's made to something called "projectsunblock.com". Firebug seems to confirm this too. I assume this shouldn't be happening right?

This is running Firefox 15.0.1, Adblock/Ghostery off, on a 5Mbps connection.

With me the whole page loads and it's just as script awaiting from projectsunblock.com.

It seems to be some online brand protection company.

Nah, at least I don't think so. It only happens on Neowin, and it goes away if I re-enable Adblock.

Project Sunblock is an brand protection service for online advertising. When you visit a website and the page tries to load an advertisement, Project Sunblock checks their databases to see how that domain/page is classified, and decides if it's "safe" to display the ad or not. It's possible their servers were bogged down, causing the page to load slow (just the same way a rogue ad can slow down the page loading). This would explain why the problem disappeared when Adblock was enabled; the site wasn't loading any advertisements!
