Opel Australia

As a manager of a mechanical shop, I have to say that this is a horrible, horrible thing. I don't mean to bag out on people who own Opels, but in Australia, they are absolute bucket's of ****.

However. That's not the point to this thread. I wanted some opinions to a question I have about this new venture into Australia.

Why?

For those playing at home, Opel is owned by General Motors, who already have a subsidiarity down here. That's GM Holden. One of the most popular, and successful brands in Australia's motoring history.

Holden for years have offered some of the most disastrous heaps of **** out of Opel/Vauxhaull. Those being the Barina, Astra, Vectra and Combo.

Does anyone know why they would now send Opel down here to sell the same cars? I notice Holden has stopped selling the Astra under their brand, and that's moved to Opel with a brand new model. However, the Barina and Combo are still being sold as Holdens. I also notice the Vectra is gone.

Any ideas? Is this just a ploy to try an sell the Astra as something new since it has a horrible reputation here, or is it just GM competing with themselves like they seem to love doing?

They are probably choosing to use Opel as budget brand. For example, in Europe, Renault have started to push their Dacia brand outside of former Eastern block countries. You can now get Dacia's in Spain, France and Germany. Dacia is a rebadged Renault with more basic features and a fraction of the price.

It's especially interesting given the relationship was two way. They sold Commodores under the Opel badge, and obviously brought stuff here.

Yeah they changed the Commodore in the UK to the Monaro, fapping quick car.

I highly doubt they would want to chose the Opel brand (the actual original brand name, you know, the one that's used in its motherland Germany) as a budget brand.

That's not to say they might suck, I don't know jack about Opels in Australia, but they surely don't want to do THAT I guess...

Commodore and Monaros were two different cars. You got the Monaro, as far as I'm aware, Europe has never seen the Commodore.

As for the pricing. There really isn't much difference. I mean, as per the competition, they are a little more. I've just realised that Holden has replaced the Holden Astra with the Holden Cruze (South Korean car locally built). The Cruze competes directly with the Astra, and is cheaper.

Even the Golf is cheaper.

That's just the thing. They can't here, because even BMW's struggle to stay together over here. 1990's BMWs are rubbish 90% of the time I see them. Falling apart, rattles, bangs, knocks, they suck. IMO.
