Install OS X 10.8 on unsupported Mac

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I have a 2006 Core 2 duo MacBook with 2GB of ram in it and GMA 950 Graphics. It currently runs Lion (10.7.5) like a champ. I was looking to get a few more years out of it, and was wondering if I could somehow install 10.8 on it through hacks, etc. I did some Google searches and found this:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1325709

Has anybody tried it? Is it stable? Can I patch it? (update to 10.8.1 and so forth)

Then, it comes down to is it worth it? Is it? I've read that ML has a lot better performance and less glitches than 10.7.

I just did some more research and found a pre-hacked installer on TPB. Should I just download that and try it?

Thanks everybody!

Tyler R.

If you have the time to spare, why not?

True.

Reading some more, I have to install kext. If I'm understanding correctly, "kext" is synonymous "driver", right? I'm new with Macs, so where are they stored on the HDD, how do i uninstall/install them, and which ones should I grab?

I'm not a mac fanboy but I've installed a hackintosh. The kexts are stored in S/L/E (System/Library/Extensions) and that's where you'd need to place them. I'd recommend using a program to autoinstall them instead of copy/pasting into that directory though as you also need to repair permissions and clear the cache. Try Kext Wizard to autoinstall.

There's a huge thread on OSx86 about it and I've got the same macbook, yes you CAN install it and it'll work fine but there's NO graphic hardware accelleration nor is there any QE because there's no official intel 64-bit driver, it's hacked and scavenged. Other than graphics it'll run fine

Oh actually it is the thread you posted,

'31st July 2012:

Posted GMA 950 kexts (No QE/CI) and iCloud fix.

29th July 2012:

Modified to add partial support for Intel GMA 950.'

Considering how heavily OS X leans on your graphics card for the Aqua interface I imagine performance being quite poor. Same effect you get in VMware Fusion when running OS X as a guest: Things are either offloaded to your CPU or disabled. Doesn't add much positivity to the overall experience.

I thought about doing this on my 2007 C2D macbook, but its not worth the hassle.

For the features you gain, its not worth the performance you loss.

I've looked around and came to the same conclusion. Without proper graphics support it's next to unusable.
