Puppy found buried alive

The Williston Police Department found a buried puppy while they were destroying evidence on Thursday.

"The officers were in a pit area, and they heard this whimpering sound just feet away from where they were," WPD Chief Dennis Strow said. "They couldn't figure it out at first."

Once they found the source of the sound, Strow said, the officers started carefully digging.

"I think the dog was less than an hour in the ground," he said.

The puppy, whose eyes were still closed, was alert. Strow said he thinks it is about 2 weeks old. He said a lieutenant "grabbed up the dog" and rushed him to the Levy Animal Clinic.

At the clinic, animal care workers fed the dog with a baby bottle and then gave him solid food. Strow said the dog is recovering nicely and is in good hands.

"The puppy is being cared for and will be placed in a loving home giving him another chance at life," he said.

As for the crime, Strow called the act cowardly and said he's determined to figure out who buried the puppy.

"Somebody knows who did this. I guarantee we?re going to follow this one and prosecute whoever did this to the fullest extent of the law," Strow said.

Strow urges anyone with information on the case to contact WPD at 528-4991.
