Alleged drunken driver hits guardrail continues driving on tire rims

Hingham police said a 49-year-old Weymouth woman was drunk when the 2009 Pontiac G6 sedan she was driving Sunday morning hit a guardrail on Justice Cushing Highway (Route 3A) then drove about one-half mile on two tire rims along 3A going around the Rotary and into the Mobil Station at 99 Summer St., Hingham, with the car on fire. This happened around 10:07 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 7) although the alleged drunken driver thought it was 4 p.m. in the afternoon, police said.

A customer, a 45-year-old Hingham man, who was pumping gas and an employee grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the flames. The car was not fully engulfed, police said. The two men helped the woman, who was alone in the car, out of the vehicle.

Following a series of field sobriety tests, police placed Barbara Ann Bearden, 49, of 170 Mediterranean Woods #53, Weymouth, under arrest for operating under the influence of alcohol; driving to endanger; leaving the scene after property damage; and failure to stay in marked lanes.

Officers Ryan Ross and Jeffrey Kilroy, along with the Hingham Fire Department, were dispatched to the gas station on the report of a car fire and that the woman who had been driving the car was unsteady on her feet. Upon arrival, the officers found the Pontiac parked at an angle only 15 feet from gas pumps that were actively being used. There was significant damage to the passenger side of the car with the two passenger side tires shredded. The fire department sprayed down the car and checked Bearden out.

Investigation revealed that the customer at the station heard a grinding noise from the Rotary and saw a car on fire approaching with only rims on the right side. The gas station employee had a similar report on the incident.

Bearden allegedly told the attendant that she had a flat tire, wanted it fixed so she could be on her way.

Officer Kilroy reported that Bearden was lethargic, she had alcohol on her breath, her eyes were glassy and bloodshot and her speech was slurred.

Officer Robert Achille checked the southbound side of Route 3A and found debris in the road near Summer Street and Rockwood Road where Bearden struck the guardrail, police said. There were gouge marks on the road where Bearden was driving on the rims. Police said they could tell from the marks in the road that she was having difficulty controlling the car. Police said the sparks from the rims caused the car fire. More debris from the Pontiac was found near the Rotary.
