Jimmy Savile's headstone removed from Scarborough cemetery

The gravestone of Sir Jimmy Savile has been removed from a Scarborough cemetery.

His family said they were dismantling the triple headstone memorial "out of respect to public opinion" following allegations he sexually abused girls.

Scotland Yard is pursuing 120 separate lines of inquiry and there could be 30 victims.

Work to remove the stone - which bears the inscription "It was good while it lasted" - finished at about midnight.

A family spokesman said the decision had been made due to "the impact the stone remaining there could have on the dignity and sanctity of the cemetery".

Sir Jimmy had a long association with Scarborough and was buried there after his death, aged 84, in October 2011

A spokeswoman for Scarborough Borough Council said: "We have been advised by the funeral directors, Joseph A Hey and Son, acting on behalf of Jimmy Savile's family, that the headstone at Woodlands Cemetery has been removed."

The Jim'll Fix It and Top Of The Pops presenter was buried in a gold coffin at a 45-degree angle at the cemetery, facing the sea, at his own request.

The coffin was later encased in concrete as a "security measure" amid speculation about its contents.

Although he was buried in November 2011, the triple headstone was only unveiled last month.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police said it was pursuing 120 separate lines of inquiry after recording eight allegations against the Leeds-born entertainer, including two accusations of rape.

Plaque vandalised

The investigation follows claims made about the BBC broadcaster in an ITV documentary last week.

BBC Director General George Entwistle has promised a "comprehensive examination" of the allegations concerning Sir Jimmy's time at the corporation.

Mr Entwistle said all "outstanding questions" would be addressed after the police had finished their inquiries.

The removal of the headstone comes days after a footpath sign in Scarborough commemorating Sir Jimmy was taken down by the borough council.

A plaque outside his flat in Scarborough was also removed last week after the words "rapist" and "paedophile" were written on it.

Leeds City Council has taken his name off an inscription on a wall commemorating high profile citizens at the city's Civic Hall.

And a wooden statue of Sir Jimmy, which stood outside Scotstoun Leisure Centre in Glasgow, was also removed from public display after the allegations were broadcast last week.

One just has to wonder why these things take so long to appear after the the fact? I am not for one minute suggesting that the allegations are not true but why don't these people, if there are so many, come out sooner? The fact that the man is dead and buried makes things look like a witch-hunt and ultimately no one really gains anything from it! The ones who end up with the **** smear on them are the unfortunate family members left behind!

I find it strange how this is all coming out the woodwork now. I don't see any protest or annoyance by his family? If they were sure he was innocent there would be a battle to clear his name or something surely?

What do you say when something as big as this happens, perhaps the best thing to do is say nothing! Damned if you do and damned if you don't!

Didn't a nephew or a godson or something try to stop the accusations when they were first aired a couple of weeks ago?

Yes, some of the reactions by different people to this "news" are very strange :s :/ I was very shocked, but it seems certain other people weren't, which is concerning.

The institutional cover-ups involved are staggering. The BBC, Police, and others should be ashamed of themselves. I'm not entirely surprised though, just look at the police's conduct in the Hillsborough disaster.

He was a racist?

Worse. Paedophile.

Some evidence that came to light today is pretty damning.

Shouldn't they wait untill charges are actually confirmed. Well I don't even know who he is so...

He was a very famous British radio DJ & TV presenter in the 60's & 70's, and did a lot of charity fundraising in the 80's onwards. Enough to earn him a knighthood.

he was old of course he was a racist pffft... silly man :p

He was an alleged paedophile... I doubt he was racist as the majority of money he raised went to helping people of all races.

A few tried and the police shot them down because he was so well respected and wouldn't believe it, very sad really..

My understanding is that the police tried to get them to pursue their claims but the alleged victims didn't want to take it any further.

It's not surprising nothing was done how many woman have come forward saying they knew? so why didn't you say something? how many women have come on TV saying they were also groped by someone famous but they don't want to mention any names as they still work at the BBC!?

There's too many women come forward for it to be false imo, and now more stars, Freddy Star infact are being accused of similar things in Jimmy Saviles dressing room while Gary Glitter, a known and convicted paedophile was apparently having sex with an under age girl infront of them all

Freddy Star denied ever having been on one of Saviles shows, until the BBC uncovered a show with him staring on Saviles show, and would you believe, the woman accusing Freddy Star is actually on the video standing right behind him (while he was never even there)

gotta wonder how many more 'pillars of the establishment' have been up to stuff Saville is now accused of.

Another recent story of someone with an honour accused of similar http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9316950/BBC-conductor-accused-of-raping-former-pupil-with-wife.html and as someone said earlier in the thread .. where were the cops, BBC and the rest of the media all this time ....

Earlier attempts at pressing charges were effectively blocked by the cops as Saville was too well connected. Also, back in the seventies, sexual discrimination was everywhere.

I'm in two minds here.

1. He did do it, paid victims to keep it on the hush and as the died the contract died, so they were allowed to speak

2. He's innocent, and the people are making it up now he's dead, as they can't really be proved wrong.

I originally thought no.2, but usually it'd be someone looking for 15 mins of fame, but after all the celebs and people who have worked for the BBC have come out I'm more inclined to believe no.1, there's simply too many respectable people coming out against Jimmie rather than random people.

Possibly, but seems like people are going on the bandwagon to show their fake support for victims. I don't really know and never will.

I know one thing in a week this will all be forgotten about
