NORTHERN CAMBRIA, PA (AP) — Police say a man tried to rob a Pennsylvania bank of $1 because he hoped to be sent to a federal prison nearby.

A police complaint says 50-year-old regular customer Jeffrey McMullen walked into an AmeriServ bank Friday in Northern Cambria and handed notes to tellers demanding a dollar.

The complaint was reported by The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown.

The complaint says tellers thought it was a joke. He then spoke with a new accounts employee and repeated he was robbing the bank for a buck.

Police say McMullen apparently wanted to be prosecuted federally so he could be taken to a prison in central Pennsylvania. Police could not immediately say why.

I doubt he'll even get prison for a dollar theft.

Probably 30 days and probation.

Maybe he needs to try again, and try harder this time.

The act of robbing a bank for any amount is a federal offense. He knew what he was doing to say that he wanted to go to Federal Prison. Why he wanted to will remain to be seen. One thing to mention is when a bank is robbed, and the news stories go out, you will never find out how much was taken. This is to discourage further bank robberies from happening.

Reminds me of that League of Super Evil episode where Voltar was trying to steal enough money from a bank to make the minimum deposit (I think that was only a dollar there too), just so he could get the free nuclear-powered toaster they offered with every new account.

I read of a similar case once, where the accused was hoping to be sent to prison as he could get free medical treatment for his bad back.

He couldn't afford medical care on his own, so attempted to rob a bank of a buck, got arrested and was sent to jail, where he received medical attention.

Maybe this is the same case here?
