iTunes 10.7 audio quality

Recommended Posts

I upgraded to iTunes 10.7 finally after ignoring the prompts from the OS for perhaps too long.

First thing I noticed is the audio quality seems to be absolutely horrible in this new version!

The following differences were VERY obvious on my sound system:

  1. iTunes seems to get confused with complicated songs, and songs where lots of instruments are playing at the same time to the point where even CD quality recordings drop to worse sounding than a 96kbs mp3, the same songs now sound better on youtube than on iTunes
  2. Despite disabling all the enhancements, the volume seems substantially reduced
  3. If I use another player such as Winamp beta for mac, the sound is fine again suggesting the new ITunes is the problem.

Is there a fix for this? Can I go back to the less broken version of iTunes?

I might not know what I'm talking about here, but I think the playback component is unrelated to iTunes itself, and is in fact an OS X API. So unless iTunes adds a processing layer to the output, there should be no difference whatsoever.

But yeah, take it with a grain of salt, I'm not entirely sure this is how it works.

In any case, I find it fascinating that it has happened, something must've gone really fubar.

Download 'AppZapper' & uninstall iTunes through that. Afterwards, you can either reinstall the same version or install a prior version of the media player.
