Everything from Bluetooth pairing, battery/transfer LEDs, e-book format conversion to BMP (that's how you actually read it in the display) are all via hardware calls. It can open and store 5 books opened, remembering the last opened page. Get yourself signed on their webpage to get the notification on when it is available.
