Is iOS 5.01 still suitable for a iPhone 4?

Recommended Posts

Hey Neowin!^^

I'm having a bit of trouble with my iPhone 4 lately (it's still on iOS 4.3.3 >.<) and I looked into restoring and updating it to iOS 5.0.1 since iOS 6 is still a bit "too new" for my taste as I like my Jailbreak modding and I want to wait with that till everything is tested and updated for iOS 6^^ So for now I simply wondered if iOS 5.0.1 is still a decent OS for a iPhone 4 or if I might encounter some bugs coming from 4.3.3 because I sadly only have SHSH blobs for 5.0.1 saved and 5.1.1 is out of question for me :pinch:

Any help or info is appreciated and thanks in advance^^

I don't remember having any specific issues with 5.0.1 on my iPhone 4. I think it should be fine. Shame you don't have access to 5.1.1. Are you sure that Cydia doesn't have a 5.1.1 blob on file for you? I think they harvest whatever Apple is offering for your headset (and it isn't necessarily dependent on what version of iOS you have installed).

Anyway, I definitely think 5.0.1 > 4.3.3

Notifications are a really nice feature.

This was a troubling message on Cydia's Upgrade Jailbreak help screen. I'm not sure if this is only for A5 devices or include A4 devices. I do seem to remember there being issues with jailbreaking iOS 5 when it was initially released (just like iOS 6) and it took a few months to become unlocked. It might have been after iOS 5.1.1 was released that a proper jailbreak was made. I can't remember but you should do more research before proceeding :(.

First of all thanks for all the info Shadrack!^^ I am really sure that I don't have any 5.1.1 blobs yeah since I checked in Cydia and with Tiny Umbrella and all I ever got was 5.0.1 and below :pinch: And I'm glad that you say that I won't have any trouble with 5.0.1 and I look really forward to the notification center too as I initially skipped iOS 5 because I was too lazy to redo all my self-made Jailbreak-tweaks^^;; Also hmm thanks for the warning about what Cydia said but isn't that only meant for iOS 5.1.0 and not 5.0.1 or am I missing something? :/

EDIT: Well Google showed me this so I guess I'm thankfully good to go^^ Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Untethered On iPhone, iPad, iPod touch (A4 Devices) Now Using Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 / Corona

Ok, right on.

I seem to remember most of the large bugs between 5.0.1 and 5.1 had to do with Siri and iPhone 4S features, so I don't think you are missing much.

When a proper iOS 6 jailbreak is released, I definitely recommend updating to that. You might have to be so up to date to get your latest SHSH blobs.

There are iOS 6 tethered jailbreaks out. Just recently they started to include Cydia and claim to be reasonably stable. Some of my major apps that I use are BiteSMS and MyWi, and neither are ready for iOS6 yet. Probably just as well to wait and see if we get an untethered jailbreak. Hope we do soon.

Ah alright thank you very much again, aslong as the battery-life stays about the same I will be happy^^ And well that looks like my decision to overlook iOS 6 for now was right, I knew it was still fresh but this sounds bad when even BiteSMS doesn't work yet :/ So I guess I will be updating to 5.0.1 when I have a few days of free time as knowing Apple I'm sure they changed around all the .pngs from iOS4 and I have to redo them entirely :pinch: Not to mention that I will run into a ton of iTunes errors along the way, I just know it :p

Upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 and use sort out an untethered jailbreak.

That's what I've had on my iPhone 4S (Apple A5) for many, many months. I'll get iOS 6.x when there is an untethered jailbreak.

If you don't mind tethered, there is a tethered iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak available for the iPhone 4 (Apple A4).
