What was the last game that genuinely surprised you in some way, and why?

The single-player campaign for Battlefield 3 surprised me. I didn't expect the various twists (

like the nuke going off in a different city and the death of Quinton Cole at the hand of Blackburn

).

First thing that comes to mind was Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. It was nice to play a vibrant RPG with a decent story. It coming out around the same time Skyrim did made it less desirable. Sad that the studio went under, would have loved a sequel.

Skyrim and Deus Ex HR.

Both from the fact that I banked hard on them being massive flops, and in the

fact that you can save Malik, which is amazing.

Sleeping dogs on the pc. I never heard of this game until it was realised, and was surprised to see how great the lighting was in the game and how smotth everything felt. Ohh and the fighting mechanic seemed really well done, better the GTA imho.

Guild Wars 2. I wasn't following it very much until I played the beta. Many great things about that game, but what surprised me was actually getting attached to the characters in the story. That was a bit of a shocker to me.

Probably Minecraft.

It is a really ugly game and everything I do in it seems so irrelevant and complicated.... yet I still play it. I'm surprised by this.

Yeah, Sleeping Dogs is a good one. Especially if you consider all the bull**** behind the scenes with it being part of the true crime series which sucked, then being sold off to SE.

The original Crysis impressed me like no other. It was freakin beautiful, and the precision and realism of player control is something that is matched by no game, including Crysis 2. I can't put my finger on it, but Crysis feels better than anything else. Basically because of Crysis, I have upgraded to a GTX 280, GTX 580, and GTX 680.

Mass Effect. I'm currently playing the first Mass Effect on the PC and besides getting lost in the big space ship city, its actually a really good game and has great graphics for 2008.

Spec Ops: The Line. Otherwise being a totally braindead third person cover-based shooter I didn't want to touch, its little mindfook story surprised me.

As for not released yet, Crysis 3 with its well-crafted trailers continue to surprise me, catering to the flashy presentation and graphics ###### parts of me, although the gameplay will quite probably be as braindead as in the second. What remains is to get my hands on a decent graphics card once again.

For me it was probably Far Cry 2. It's the first game I would really recognise as being a true sandbox with your actions able to influence (admittedly, rather limitingly) the rest of the environment. Being able to start a fire one side of a camp and swing round to the other to pick people off with a sniper round to the back of the head while they're investigating was amazing to me. Might even have to replay it before being able to play number 3.

Other than that, I think the last game that really impressed me was C&C Generals and the Zero Hour expansions. Not for anything too ground breaking, I just consider it the pinnacle of the old school RTS genre, and had a lot of things the Red Alert 3 missed to make it as enjoyable and engrossing.

my first MMORPG (Helbreath). I was amazed that I could play a game with other people. I was amazed that I could level up and fight and use magic and weapons to play a game.

The Force Unleashed. Despite its flaws (which were all attributed to Lucas and his "ooh this would be cool" input), the storyline was much more in-keeping with Star Wars than anything I've seen in the last 20 years.

Another vote for Spec Ops: The Line. I'm still going through it, and despite the GoW style shoot-and-cover gameplay I've found the story to be interesting, and having to make choices (something I haven't fully explored yet) was great, it really makes me feel for the main character.

Well, there is not a single one in the recent memory. Hmmm... Lets see

Journey, from PS, was absolutely classic. All of it

Battlefield 3, my first online shooter. It has to be. Not like I never played an online shooter before, infact, played almost all of them, just not owned any. :shiftyninja:

Never was, I able to get into Fallout 3, no matter how hard I tried. But a month ago or so, I started it again, and only this time, I went along, and along, and along. Surprises me so much, how well a game from 2007 was still impressive 5 years after. (Y)

Original Crysis was a beast. Everything about it, every singly aspect of the game was awesome, and new, and genuine.

The story of Spec Ops: THe Line, was also surprising, especially in the end.

And very, very recently, Dishonored. A big thumbs up for this one. Both surprising and impressive.

I would have to say the first game in the "F.E.A.R." series, although at the time when it came out, I only ended up playing the demo, which was just parts of the first level stiched together. I didn't expect the ghost girl, and it gave me chills. Now, I've played horror themed games before, but they didn't affect me the way this one did!

For me it was Rayman: Origins.

I had always heard good things about Rayman, but never great things really. Still, I decided to check it out on the Vita's launch, and I was really glad I did. Easily my favorite platformer in recent years. Art style, audio, the controls, pretty much everything about it is remarkable.
