Leaked screenshots apparently confirm Google Maps coming back to iOS6

Recommended Posts

A series of leaked screenshots appear to confirm that Google is working to develop a Maps app for iOS6.

San Francisco-based developer, Ben Guild, posted the series of blurry pictures on his blog (not pictured above) just after midnight on Sunday morning claiming that they showed the alpha version of a Google Maps app for Apple's mobile OS.

In addition to the images Guild posted technical information concerning the app: "It's vector-based. It's got two-finger rotation to any angle. It's super fast. Four-inch height of the iPhone 5 is supported!"

Forbes added that the app is expected to combine Google Maps with another of the company's geographical information services, Google Earth, which would take advantage of the latter's impressive library of satellite and historical archive imagery.

Apple faced heavy criticism earlier this year after the release of its iOS6 saw the company drop Google's map app in favour of Apple's own Tom-Tom-powered sevice. While Apple's map app was far from unusable, negative reactions to the service from consumers saw Apple's CEO Tim Cook offer a public apology on the company's website.

I highly doubt this, the iMaps are being developed and i prefer having the turn by turn than go back to google maps. When i need google maps i can go on Safari and google the place. In a near future we will have an google map App, when google decides to bring that into store.

Did you even read it? You highly doubt something that you then go on to agree with.

The new maps app has actually been working really well for me so far with the exception of a Mexican restaurant in Indiana that was on the wrong side of the road. But as long as Google Maps is $10 or less, I'll buy it. It's worth it as a backup.

Google will never make it paid. You don't get world dominance by selling stuff.

I've never had a wrong direction from Google maps and I've been using Android for nearly 4 years now. The evidence I've seen is that Apple's maps app is a pretty poor substitute. Thankfully as I wouldn't touch any iOS device with a 40 foot barge pole I don't have to lose functionality because of Apple's megalomania.

The only thing that bothers me is Apple is going to have to approve this or else face even more public backlash. Yet, if they approve this, shouldn't they also then approve all the various web browsers and apps that have been rejected for "emulating stock behavior" or whatever?

There are a lot of different browsers, but they can't use their own engine. They have to use the Safari engine and even that is the slower version used by UIWebview.

They let in alot of things now that 'emulate stock behavior'. On my phone I have Chrome, Sparrow, Waze. About the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is a text messaging app.

I respect you even more now.
