The two-time Emmy winner, who co-stars in the new film Smashed, has signed on as the lead in DreamWorks’ upcoming feature film Need For Speed.

Inspired by the hit Electronic Arts video game series, the racing film will be directed by Scott Waugh, who made this year’s Navy SEALs rescue drama Act of Valor. Filming for Need For Speed is set to begin early next year, according to Holly Bario, president of production at DreamWorks. Need For Speed will be in theaters Feb. 7, 2014.

Brothers George and John Gatins concocted the movie’s story, which was inspired by the game series but isn’t based on any one title, with George (executive producer of the comedy She’s Out of My League) penning the final screenplay. John, screenwriter of Real Steel, Coach Carter, and the upcoming Denzel Washington drama Flight, will co-produce Need For Speed with EA’s Patrick O’Brien and Mark Sourian, who is also producing the upcoming DreamWorks comedy Starbuck.

I still cringe at the thought, but since I do enjoy NFS and racing movies I'll hit it up anyway.

He really is a good actor. If the cast is good, and the movie is well written, it has potential to at least be a pretty good movie. Though I feel street racing movies have been overdone, especially with how there are like 15 Fast and Furious movies now.

From everything we’ve heard so far (and we’ve heard some things) DreamWorks’ adaptation of Electronic Arts’ Need For Speed game franchise is shaping up to be much more than just your flashy gear head action film. More proof roars in today as Imogen Poots has entered negotiations to co-star with Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul.

Poots is locking down a deal to play a savvy exotic car dealer who helps the wealthy secure high-end racing vehicles and street demons. Paul will be doing a lot of driving as the lead, but from the sounds of it Poots will also be behind the steering wheel.

Act Of Valour director Scott Waugh is calling the shots, working from a script co-written by John and George Gatins. The aim is to channel the spirit of the video games, but make the movie feel more like a car-culture film of the 1970s.

Waugh is in pre-production now, with the film set to race into cinemas on February 7, 2014. Poots will be seen in Greetings From Tim Buckley, A Late Quartet and Michael Winterbottom’s still-untitled Paul Raymond film. And Need won’t be her first time sharing the screen with Paul; they appear together in A Long Way Down, scheduled to arrive next year.

Michael Keaton Joins DreamWorks’ NEED FOR SPEED

Quote

Heat Vision reports that Keaton will play a “reclusive and eccentric host of an underground supercar race where he invites the best drivers from around the world.” The Need for Speed adaptation, written by John Gatins (Flight), centers on “a local street racer (Paul) who partners with a rich and arrogant business associate (Cooper), only to find himself framed by his colleague and sent to prison. After his stint in the joint, he joins a New York-to-Los Angeles race to get revenge. But when the ex-partner learns of the scheme, he puts a massive bounty on the racer’s head, forcing him to run a cross-country gauntlet of illegal racers in all manner of supercharged vehicles.”
