The Great Dropbox Space Race

The Details

  • Rules
    • You must register for Space Race with an eligible school email address (if you have an existing Dropbox account you can still join)!
    • If you?ve signed up for Dropbox with a non-school email, no problem! You can verify your school account on the Space Race page.
    • Your school gets 1 point for each person who registers for Space Race and installs Dropbox on their computer (if they haven?t already).
    • Your school gets 2 more points for each person that goes through the Get Started guide (including you!)

    [*]Free Space!

    • Just by signing up, you get 3 GB for two years.
    • Each level your school achieves means more free space. That means the more classmates and friends you rally to Dropbox, the more space every Space Racer at your school gets, up to 25 GB for two years!
    • In addition to earning points, you?ll still get the normal 500 MB bonus for each referral.

[*]You?ll have 8 weeks to get as many people as you can from your school signed up for Space Race!

If they want to make money maybe they should lower their prices to compete with Skydrive and G-Drive instead of continuously giving away free space through tedious methods. I'm happy to pay but their prices need to be cut by at least 25%... 50% if they want to match Skydrive.

Only for two years? So what happens if you have data on there and the space is removed..they take away some files and delete them?

You'd probably get email warning/s, and finally an account restriction...

Edit: Beaten.

Im signed up to a few of these services i have dropbox, skydrive, gdrive and cubby, i rarly use them too if im honest infact i installed cubby then just forgot about it and its invite only as its running is beta.

The thing with these services is they are good for backups but as ur internet speeds get better and so do our hard drives, we make our own backups meaning we think "Well, i dont really need that online solution thats going to charge me, if i buy another hard drive and back up my own data im getting more space at a fixed price!" Of cause then all you need to do is make your own custom links and shared folders, this is omething i need to look into be easier than me uploading a file here and there just move it and share the link it be quicker.

Not to sound like an unthankful brat, but I think seeing how Skydrive offers 25GB for free from the get go, I think this is cheaping out a bit. :p

Also, not keen on limited time storage generally.

If you originally had the 25GB of storage they allowed you to keep it when they changed their terms a while back.

As of now all new accounts are 2 or 5GB I think.

I started out with dropbox the 2Gb. Now with referrals and the games they had I am up to 14Gb. Then I have a few Gb on box.net. i might try doing the google cloud but will see. I would sign up for this but I do not want temporary space. that is bogus.

It's free so it's better than nothing.

Don't get me wrong. I use SkyDrive (one of those who got the 25GB) but 2 years for free is still a long time which is good for students..

7gb. And yes if you originally had 25gb you could keep that for free.
