This genre defining game and its expansion pack offers greatly enhanced graphics, deeply immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece. Players will also experience a never-before-seen single-player story, The Lost Mission, featuring seven heart-pounding levels that will once again have them on the edge of their seats.

Anyone play this yet? How would you rate the graphics overhaul compared to the original Doom 3? Thanks.

I can't find a decent comparison of the old doom 3 with the new one. So I can't decide if I want this or not. Also, I've read that while the flashlight can stay on all the time, it no longer cast shadows, which is a huge let down.

Old Doom 3 runs like crap at high image quality settings. Also Nvidia's threaded optimisation breaks it if left on/auto.

I might pick up the BFG version of they finally recognise 1080p and Steam have a sale.

What? The cast shadows is what gave it the spooky atmosphere. I liked the game even more with the player shadow enabled.

Idk, I might wait awhile for a sell to hit Steam. I predict a $9.99 price in the near future on this face lift of an 8 year old game.

Doom 3 was too much of a closet-script-fest to be enjoyable.

I walk down a clear corridor, turn around and there's a massive ****ing lanky skeleton there.... times 100.

If it was like that I might have enjoyed it a little more. Instead every mob in that game made sure you heard them coming as soon as you came in into a room. It would have been way scarier to turn around and something is right behind you about to carve your face up. But no...the mobs might as well say "I'm in here and I'm going to come get you".

That being said, I really loved Doom 3. I found the game to be a fun play through. The hell levels were all fantastic IMO. The dark corridor levels (which is the majority of the game) got old fast, however.

The last boss in the expansion was ridiculously difficult. I don't think I ever figured out how to beat him. He seemed to move before I could ever get any shots off.

Anyone know what the setting is for the Lost Mission?

After beating The Lost Mission campaign, I am really regretting my purchase. It took me under two hours to beat it on the second hardest difficulty. Further, the graphics are not too different than the 2004 release. Sure, there is motion blur if you like that kind of thing, but it all pales in comparison to a modded copy of the original.

The final boss is not a new boss. It's just the guardian from the original, only it can see and it doesn't have the seekers floating around it.

Wait for a sale.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll wait for the sale.

I've read that the Doom 3 HD mod spanks this in terms of graphics. If there is any interest (not sure if there is in an 8 year old game), then maybe BFG will get an HD mod (which is really kind of lame the more I think about it). This WAS suppose to be the original HD mod.

Did they even update those terrible, terrible wall textures? I mean, they were considered terrible back in 2004...

It's a clear commercial move to ramp up interest for Doom 4. And no, I'm not interested in remakes of games that still works perfectly on my PCs. id has become dirty cheap when it comes to supporting the PC platform, as a PC gamer I won't encourage this kind of horrible, horrible behavior. They can screw themselves with the BFG edition of Doom 3....

They did nothing to screw themselves with the BFG edition as they took the Pc version and made it better then it ever was ramping up the pace of the game taking out sections that were to boring or made no sense and stuff like that and adding in new tech to it like 3d vision stuff the gameplay is faster more enemies added in some new monsters. impriving the network stuff and changing some things for a better gameplay but yea how in the world do you think they screwed themselves

They're screwing themselves because they keep alienating their fan base. Instead of making products they would actually want, they are trying, and failing, to reach to a completely new market. I can only say that with Rage, but only time will tell with DOOM 3 BFG.

I guess I am the only one who sees this as a move to expose Doom 3 to a larger, which no need to read between the lines, I mean consoles, audience.

Sure, I guess there is a new breed of PC gamers out there who have maybe not played it, but chances are if they are only PC gamers, they would not be all that impressed with Doom 3 anyway.

So I do not get all the hate. Yes it is dumbed down (some, in other areas it has been improved), but it had to be for consoles, but this is because it is meant to expose Doom 3 to those who would have never been exposed to it otherwise.

If Blizzard were to re-release Warcraft 3 + Expansion with (even slightly) revamped graphics, widescreen support, a short extra single player campaign and sold it for $30, I'd probably buy it. I friggen loved that game. I'd feel the same if Valve did a Half-Life 2 facelift release. I don't see any problem with companies doing face lifts on some old games and wanting to make money off of that. If id would have release Doom 3 BFG in 2005 or 2006, sure that is too close and it shows a real lack of support. I hate that "enhanced" edition crap like The Witcher, for example. But its been 8 years for Doom 3. Like Dirty Larry pointed out they are targeting a new crowd now. And, probably, if you didn't like it then you won't like it now. Doom 3 was a real mixed review of a game.

But for this one, I still think it is probably best to hold out for the sales. It would be nice if there were an XBox 360 demo because I'd like to see how well the controls handle.

Well, they are running a promotional to "upgrade" your current version of Doom 3 (purchased through steam) to Doom 3 BFG for $20 so I bit the bullet and bought it last night. So far I've been enjoying most of the Lost Mission but I was frustrated when on the first level I was hopelessly loss looking for a key. I forgot that the main "puzzle" of the doom series was you find the key and then you have to go back and find the door... which does kind of get old and repetitive.

So far I've been focused on the Lost Mission, here are some of my impressions:

1. Difficulty of Lost Mission is about on par with the original Doom 3. The Doom 3 expansion was a bit harder than the original, and I was hoping Lost Mission would be targeting players who wanted even more of a challenge.

2. Textures still look like absolute ****.

3. The frame rate is where it is at. Playing at 120fps brings a whole new level of immersion that I'm really loving. I think that was the key in RAGE as well. id can make a good engine, no doubt.

4. There is friggen ammo and health packs EVERYWHERE. Doesn't really feel very survival-horror-fps. More like unlimited ammo and HP (like Halo or Gears of War) style fps. There are so many health packs so far I don't see why they didn't just drop the HP system all together and adopt the over-done heal by doing nothing model that they implemented in RAGE (and I still don't really like). I like questioning whether or not I should quick-save when my HP is down to 30% and I'm not sure if I'll make it to the next health pack... but so far this new content has gone overboard with the ammo and health packs.

That sucks! Why didn't they update the wall textures? BTW: Is this on the ID5 engine?

No it's still ID Tech 4, though a stripped down version of ID Tech 5 was used to bring Doom 1 and 2 to the consoles apparently (don't ask me why they did it that way...)

Doom3 actually using both id tech 4 and 5 stuff as the BFG version they put in allot of the id tech 5 Rage gun mechanics and network stack system and also beefed up the lighting and shadow system using the Tech 5 lighting render and such

Which is all great, except that the flashlight USED to cast shadows of the mobs and now it does not :(. Oh hum, hurray for upgrades! Most of Lost Mission you don't even need to use your flashlight so it is probably moot point. I suspect that the original Doom 3 is lightened up some, but at this point I have no desire to replay those missions.

Nevermind. You can't enable the player shadow. It resets to OFF.

id Tech 5 has some good things about it, but the shadowing is not one of them.

Well they are 2 engines that is why using what is more practical methods of doing things for the time they was created the id tech 4 had some trade offs tho to it as it could not do global illuminations or soft-shadows as most to all games use today but Doom 3 BFG uses some rendering cvode from id tech 5 and all the networking stuff but yea i agree they need to send out a patch to make the shadows a bit more to what they used to be but beyond that i am loving the game it is a much faster paces game
