The Unfinished Swan Review

Recommended Posts

Expectations were high from the first time IGN wrote about developer Giant Sparrow. Aside from working on a game that looks like nothing else on the PlayStation Network, comparisons to flow, Flower, and Journey developer thatgamecompany were immediately drawn. Both Giant Sparrow and thatgamecompany sprung from the USC game design program and both were snatched up by PlayStation for three-game contracts.

The Unfinished Swan is Giant Sparrow's first game from its deal, and it's nothing short of spectacular.

I started playing this last night. I've got to the

maze leading up to the castle

; I really like the game so far. It's hard to pinpoint why I like it, but I just do. It's definitely been worth the four year wait. :)

I have still yet to actually purchase it, but I think this just sealed the deal for me. Will be picking it up tonight I believe. (Y)

Tempting... I'll have to check my budget. EU got a discount but it's still quite a chunk of money for a game with a subjective appeal.

I was super hyped about this game years ago (it's been in development forever), but now that it is PS3 only, I am no longer interested. If they ever make a PC port I'll probably pick it up, but as a primary PC gamer (I rarely play console games at all, let alone go out and buy them, plus FPS games suck on controllers), I'll never pick it up until there's a PS3 emulator that runs it or they port it to the PC.

If you have a PS3 though, why not pick it up? Seems you just don't want to? It's not exactly a fast paced game so the FPS on consoles argument is null. It's a good game on its own, plays well with the Move controller if you have one although can get a little confusing if you don't use enough paint.

Admirable to try, but I would say If someone has themselves this convinced FPS's on the consoles are that bad, then really no changing their mind at the end of the day.

Thanks for that helpful input...

Anyway: I played this a few days ago at my mates house and have to admit I loved it. Went it quite skeptical when he explained the concept but I got through the first few "levels"/"chapters" really quickly hunting for baloons, ways through etc and really enjoyed the mechanics of the game and how it felt like an original game. Also, the fact that it wasn't just wandering around in nothingness, the puzzles are really quick but also quite cereberal and such a nice change to the standard run and gun nonsense released so often. If you're even slightly on the fence, I would highly recommend giving it a try.

It's not that FPS games on consoles are bad, its the controls that get me. I understand that it is not a fast-paced game like standard FPS games, but joysticks in FPS games (turn speed based on angle of stick, the time it takes the stick to reset is how long it takes to stop turning) feel similar to keyboards in racing games (you are either turning, or not.....). I admit I do have limited experience playing FPS games with controllers, but the experiences I do have were bad enough that I am willing to assume all FPS games on consoles (or using controllers, rather) are just as bad.

I prefer to aim (in an FPS) at the speed that I move the mouse, not in X amount of time once I move and hold the joystick towards where I want to go. Even if it's not competitive or fast-paced, I feel it was a pretty poor decision for them to go PS3 only (not even console-only, but locked down to only 1 console). I understand it's a small company, but they cut off so much potential profit by locking it down to a single system. I really hope they at least port it to other systems.

  • 2 weeks later...

this is not really an FPS, come on, it's like Mirror's Edge went and had a baby with Flower and Journey. it's a good game, not as feel good and flowing as the other two, it gets convoluted at times, which i don't much like. there is more of a challenge here. the story is quite touching, but nowhere near as moving as the messages in Flower and Journey, once again.
