In the market for an ULTRALIGHT tablet

Recommended Posts

Got tired of my iPad 3, weights a ton and sometimes my hands hurt while reading. I use tablets for document consulting, quick work email replying and html based forms but mostly for reading so I need something light but very well build since I'm on the move constantly.

So far I've read that Asus Nexus 7 is the best bang for the bug and with a quite resistant body (Backside rubber, gorilla corning in front).

Any other suggestions?

Maybe I should wait for an iPad mini just because iOS has GoodReader. I used to have a Sony Tablet S back in the day and no pdf reader come even close to Goodreader. Has a better pdf reader emerged? Believe me, I tried, if not all, most of them.

Was gonna say Surface RT, but its nearly the same.

Nexus 7 is a good one. With Jelly Beans on it, I would recommend it, because the performance has gone pretty smooth with Project Butter

iPad mini sounds another good alternative. It weighs around 300 grams which is less than half the weight of iPad. Plus, it seems easier to carry around, but can't say for sure as I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks a lot Muhammad.

No one else? I see a lot of people always bragging about their Android tablets so I expected more opinions.

Heck, I might even appreciate Boz's opinion ;)

Vivo RT is the lightest 10" tablet you'll find (1.1lbs). Lighter than the iPad 2.

Otherwise you're moving into the mini-tablet or e-reader category.

Since you already have an IPAD3 - there is no use for you to get back into that size tablet even it is lighter.

I was in the same situation as you. I wanted to enjoy my books again and the iPad3 was actually taking away from my experience. I had a Kindle before but I wanted something more. When the iPads came out I moved that way. I upgraded the iPad2 as I felt the text was never that sharp. I feel the same way for the iPad mini. The iPad3 with it's Retina really made the text sharp but the 10" form factor really made it not as enjoyable to read. Cumbersome to hold and heavy over time. I started to read less and less due to the form factor.

So I went searching for a 7" but I wanted to wait for a high res screen to come along. The low res iPad mini was a disappointment. The Nexus 7 and the Kindle HD were my choices and then I heard about the Nook HD. I went to take a look and I was blown away with the sharpness of the text and the blacks. It is really one of the nicest screens in this size form factor on the market period.

The 1440x900 is the best screen I have looked at. It is really that good. Of course my needs were really E-Book related/Reading.

Don't discount this tablet because I would boldly say it is the best reading tablet on the market right now.

Good luck to you.

No, I prefer functionality over thickness.

Good thing then this thread is not about you ;)

To everyone else. Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Seems that it will be either a Nook Color or a Nexus 7
