A Romanian woman killed her 8 year-old disabled daughter on Wednesday because she couldn't pay for her care, Libertatea newspaper reports.

Desperate about the 1,000 Euro unpaid bills for utilities, the 33 year-old Cristina N. living in one of Bucharest most poor quarters, put a pillow n her daughters mouth and nose and suffocated her.

The news shocked the neighbours but also the Police officers who responded to the emergency call of one neighbour.

Maria, 74 told journalists that Roxy, the little girl was suffering from a degenerative disease and couldn't move her legs. The neighbour says that the woman complained to her relatives and friends that she was desperate and unable to pay the debts and that she wasn't able to cope with the daughter's treatment any longer.

The woman was arrested and she will be evaluated by a psychiatrist before charges will be made.

We are not in her shoes, we can't judge. Desperate time can call for desperate mesure when you're face with something you think you can't handle. It's Romania, If the family did not help, nobody else will.

This is not uncommon guys, I've heard of a lot of cases like that even on discovery channel, funny thing is, they actually do it because they "love" them, altruism I think it was the word I heard, there is a point where the mother's brain cannot tolerate more suffering from her daughter and then decides that dead is not an unfeasible option... therefore this.

are you suggesting she used something safer like a firearm?

[sarcasm] Sure. Suffocating is slow, painful and cruel. With a firearm, if done correctly, would have been quicker, more humane. [/sarcasm]

Wow, mother of the year!! What a terrible thing to do, good grief!

I don't know, would you be able to watch your kid suffer that much? The kid is 8, can't use her legs, will eventually lose the ability to control other parts of her body and probably is (or will be) miserable. I doubt the mother got any pleasure from watching her kid suffer and eventually die.

This is why babies with severe disabilities should be required by law to be aborted.

They are only a drain. A financial and emotional drain on the family and a drain on tax payers dollars.

Some would say you are cruel and mean. Smart people would say you are correct.

Pretty much this. Apart from the monetary costs, the kid isn't going to live a happy life. You're not doing him any favors by bringing him into this world, you're just condemning him to a life of misery and pain. He/she's going to watch others grow up, lead happy lives and all they're going to be able to think about is why me / why can't I have that.

So if the mother had called for help and given up her daughter, someone / authority must have something in place to take care of her ? no ?

Would she not have been taken into care ? (The daughter not the mother)
