is there a harddrive clone tool that makes img file and only copys used bytes so it isnt a big file with the empty bytes?

Acronis True Image is the easiest

Heh, any above-average backup and cloning tool has an option to copy only the used part of an HDD/Partition - since 1998 :-P. Macrium Reflect Free is the best of the bunch: it's easy, it's powerful, and it's free.

I always like Clonezilla, it is also free and open source.
